Passed 240k km on the way home from Raleigh NC yesterday. I am going to miss the effortless autobahn cruising of the NA I-6 and dynamic cruise control.......

I am confused I thought you were moving to Europe?  If so, how would you miss the autobahn if you were moving there?

On certain sections of freeway in the US, it is very common for me to cruise in the 150-180+ range with occasional spurts faster. Legal? Absolutely not. Do I do it when there's little traffic and road design permits it? Yes.

The 3er takes it in such stride. I've done the same with similarly powered turbo 4s and it's just not the same.

Thanks that's what got me.  As no where in North America is the highway labelled an autobahn...

I suspect a turbo 3er wouldn't perform as well either.  I would take a V6 over a turbo 4 as well.

I agree, some of the latest turbo 4s are getting very good, but can't replicate a properly tuned 6 cylinder.

What RPM does the 3 cruise at in that speed range? I love the V6 in my SLK, but the gearing is set so that if I am cruising at those speeds I am around 4000rpm...At that rpm the motor is still silent and smooth, but knowing it's spinning that fast bugs me just a bit.

both my turbo 4 Saab and V6 Alfa can easily cruise at high speeds - they feel the same despite the Alfa being roughly 70hp down on the Saab...both get to extra legal speeds effortlessly and seem to run into the limiter before they run out of shove
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

In 6th gear:

130 @ 2750r/min (torque peak)
150 @ 3200r/min
180 @ 4000r/min

Vmax is 240 and it's happy to pull there but I usually don't cruise for extended periods above 160-170 because of the speed differential (other traffic if present is 130-140 in these zones) and fuel consumption.

Plenty smooth (more wind noise than engine) and geared for useful acceleration. I don't like overgeared cars that require a downshift to gain speed.

Yeah, those rpms are a bit lower than the SLK, which only has 5 cogs, but the SLK makes peak torque at 3K, and it does pull hard even from high speeds, which feels great :D....I guess I am just more used to the big lazy geared V8s.

for the class of car and age, it is peppy enough

would equate it to an old paint - nothing fast or powerful or fancy, but got the job done

Yeah, I have had 4 cars that struggled for 100 hp.  Each time I said never again.

1983 or 1984 Nissan Micra - Manual
1998 Toyota Tercel - Manual
1990 Ford Escort - Auto (this is was the worse car I ever drove, step mother gave it to me.
1999 Hyundai Accent - Manual

Old Blue was a great car because...she was a car that got me where I needed to go...and cost me under $1000 for 3 years driving with 2 oil changes in maintenance. Especially in Aus where cars cost stupid money, I was happy with the experience. Better than walking or biking or public transport.

My micra was $300, the Escort was free, the Tercel was around $3000, but I sold it for $2200!, the Accent was a lease that I brought back after 6 months, had to pay the early termination penalty, around $750.  All cars got me where I needed to go, but did a shitty job doing it.  The Tercel was just adequate.  The damn Escort was a 3 speed!

Minivan search not going well.  Partly because, deep down, I don't think I want to drive one (you guys were all right, I admit), and thus anytime a decent one comes up I am too slow to jump on it.

Alternatively, a nice 2012 Sequoia Platinum with 160k has been sitting on the local Honda lot for quite some time and is intriguing....total overkill and unnecessary, but I am daydreaming of a serene, vault-like highway experience...

Drove my dads Sequoia down to Calgary this weekend, can confirm, absolutely rock solid and silent at X kms above the speed limit
Lighten up Francis.....
