Here's a 40 sec video of my brake noise first thing in the morning.  I park in an enclosed parkade that is warmer and more humid than outside.  Noise goes away after a couple stops.  Likely rotor rust causing the racket.

Yup.  Gotta scrape the surface corrosion off.

My nephew has a 2010 mazda 3 . He has the same noise but only happens when he is backing up . The first start of the day.
The noise is coming from the rear though.
I took the brakes a part and lubed the slider pins. I don't think it helped. It could be corrosion like Jon says but this era of mazda 3 seems to be prone to this.
My nephew only drives a very short distance to work so this doesn't help either.

I'm taking the car to the shop on Monday for a brake inspection, just to make sure everything is okay.

I took pics of the driver's side rotors this morning.  The attached pic is the rear rotor.  Does that look like a crack?

Sent the pic to my shop.  Yeah, it's cracked.  Same thing on the passenger side.

Odd - I've never seen one crack like that. I think I'd replace it.

Two estimators I showed the pics to said they've never seen it happen.  The rotors are getting replaced within 24 hours.

Weird.  I've heard about some early brake wear issues on Mazda 3's, but not cracked discs.

Well, this is embarrassing.

I took the car to the shop, the shop took the wheels off, examined the rotors as bed they could and could not find any cracks.  They did say there was a small lip at the edge of the braking surface and they believed the position of the flash created a shadow that looked like there was a crack.  He said they could replace the disks and pads if I wanted, but there wasn't a reason to.  I said, okay, I won't.

When I got the car back, I tried the flash experiment: one pic with the flash above the lens and one pic with the flash below the lens.  See if you can figure out which is which.

I've been a customer of this shop for a few years now and will continue to be.

Weather was nice (+8, sunny, no wind) and I had finished what I set out to do for the day on my living room project; so I uncovered the TA first the first time in 5-6 weeks to go for a drive. Started right up, and while it was warming up i decided to open the hood and do a quick check. Good thing I did as I found a coolant leak which turned out to be a loose clamp on a heater hose and a vacuum leak due to a cracked connector I must have missed when I went through all the vacuum lines a couple years ago.

Oh well, 15 minutes under the hood, and I got to go on a nice December drive....warm temps and dry roads will not be around much longer :D
