Mrs. Hire's Volvo is back from the dealership - needed a replacement of the mild hybrid system battery. Obviously a warranty issue but still... ridiculous.

Interesting. Is the mild hybrid wizardry using a beefed up Pb battery or a dedicated Li-ion unit?

Finally got around to replace the coolant expansion tank on the BMW.
Eventless and easy swap, no leaks, but have some doubts on the quality of the part. Mahle, which is generally a good brand, but this particular part is made in China, unlike few other parts I bought from this brand which are typically made in Germany or EU.

Will see if it holds up...

So, now that all the cuts on my knuckles have finally healed from that nightmare water pump replacement job a couple weeks ago, it seems the water pump I installed has a faulty thermostat.  >:(

I’ve been trying to ignore it, thinking it’s just been really cold recently, thinking it will get better… but it seems clear the facking thing is stuck open.

Not sure yet if I’ll go in there again to fix it.  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

thermostat is in the water pump? That is inconvenient. Is that common now? I might be out of the loop since the last one I changed was on a Fiero.

Yeah, it’s integrated into the pump: buy a new pump and you get a new thermostat (coolant temp sensor is in there too.)

The only (slightly) good news is that I should be able to change the t-stat without removing the pump from the block. Of course, there’s not a lot of room down there, so may end up being easier just to pull the pump anyway.  ::)

I think on MK7 GTI, the thermostat housing is bolted onto the water pump so I believe you need to take the water pump out anyway to replace the thermostat as it appears to be on the engine side (?!)...

I guess it depends on a case by case basis.... Maybe it's a matter of personal perception, but I prefer parts made in EU (any part of it) rather than China. I only bought one other part for the BMW which was made in China (headlight washers by VEMO/German company but made in China) and I had to replace it within one-year warranty. I try to avoid "made in China" car parts if all possible.

YMMV....

Mine’s a MK6. There’s definitely access to the t-stat from the outer side, but the bolts are kind of underneath. I think it’s doable, but I’m sure will be awkward.  ::)

Good luck and the least possible cuts.... :)

Noted that this is one of those jobs which I will let the shop do end-to-end (including sourcing the parts) when the time comes....

^^ Thanks. I was going to let the shop do it the first time, but the $1,300 estimate put me off. I think I paid $350 total for the new pump and coolant. Just couldn’t stomach giving away a grand.

Anyway, just read the codes, and sure enough I’ve got a P2181 - cooling system malfunction. Thought it would have triggered a CEL, but nope.

Oh well, guess that confirms it.  :P

Dang... it's certainly expensive (for BMW I paid $180 labor for WP+T-stat), but will have to suck it up I guess... What did you get for parts?

Is there a recommended interval to replace the WP on the GTI? I haven't checked it yet as I'm at 76K km so I should be OK for a while (unless something goes...).

MK6 is well known for leaking water pumps, but I was actually pretty lucky. Original pump lasted 8 years with no problems, and I only replaced it as preventative maintenance because it's such a PITA to get to and I already had access to it for other work I was doing at the time. The second pump lasted maybe 3-4 years before it developed a small leak. I'd just been topping it up as needed, but figured I'd do a proper repair to get the car ready for sale.  ::)

Original pump was OE plastic, and like I said worked just fine, so I replaced it with another OE plastic one. This time I figured I'd get the "upgrade" pump, a metal one from Rein (Graf also makes metal pumps for these.) Interwebs say metal is the way to go, and the price is about the same, so I figured why not.

Replacement is so expensive because half the engine needs to come apart to get to it (it's buried under the intake manifold.) Not sure if it's the same on the MK7, but I suspect so.

Crazy that VW can't make a water pump that doesn't leak, running into this issue with my Mk7 TDI.

Not sure how hard it is to replace, but I've seen estimates in line with what you had been given.
