Wasn't intending to, but have decided to remove the 35s BFG KO2 for the winter and installing 20 inch Ford chrome rims with slightly worn (14K km) Blizzacks.  Wheel gap is pretty big though.  :P   Should be able to stick it out till next March.  No blizzacks in a 275/65/20 to be had within 100 km plus hard to ditch perfectly good used ones.

Are the Blizzak better than KO in winter?

Did an oil change on the GTI, for the first time on time (one year) rather than kms. Only 6,500 km driven this year....
How much on the BMW?

Probably around 14,000 km over the same period out of 16,000 km since I got it.
The BMW is due too in about 600 km @8,000 km.
Nice!!

Putting some decent mileage on it!!

Most of those kms were just driving around for no reason during the  "honeymoon" period. This will probably change from now on.

In my experience, yes.  The KO's are great in deep snow - but that's about it.  They turn into hockey pucks when its cold, and have minimal siping to wick away water on ice.  The result is that when you're driving around on hardpack, or slippery surfaces, you essentially have zero traction.  I'm not sure how BFGoodrich managed to get the three peak mountain snowflake on them, but I imagine they pointed to their deep snow performance, and perhaps some money changed hands with the governing body.

Blizzaks, or essentially any other winter tire with a special compound, are far superior in most wintry conditions.  The KO2's will be better on those days when a foot of snow has fallen, though.

^^ No need to imagine anything nefarious with bribes or the like. The tires wear the symbol because the symbol is a joke.

To “earn” the 3PMS symbol, all a tire has to do is pass an acceleration test on packed snow. That’s it. It just needs to accelerate 10% faster than the reference all-season tire.

Is there any good A/T tires for winter driving? Always fought with my fleet bosses to get true winter tires put on the pickups, every time even the cheapest winter tire was a huge improvement

Nokian has a new all-weather AT tire called the Outpost APT and AT. Not a lot of reviews out on it since it only recently was released, but typically the Nokian winter tire line were always highly rated. Will be interesting to see how good they are for winter use.

I'm sure there is, but maybe then that creates a compromise for off roading?

I read a review for the new Vredestein Pinta AT. Some guy in Colorado (IIRC) put these on a Chevy Tahoe or Suburban. Truck was a commuter and a "work" truck. Was used off road in a manner akin to what a farm or ranch vehicle might be used as.

Anyways, guy loved them in the Colorado snow and off road. Said the vehicle was more limiting than tires due to low ground clearance.

I presume this tire would work for most year round.

But maybe not for super-hard core off road bro.

FWIW, I'm a bit of a Vredestein slappy. Loved them on my Supra and both our Audis. So I might be slightly biased.

EDIT: Here's the review https://www.utvdriver.com/story/reviews/vredestein-pinza-all-terrain-tire-review/

Are the Blizzak better than KO in winter?

In hard packed snow, as a result of half melted snow from salt, which is the standard around my area, they are much better.  I was shifting around pretty good on some passing the last snow storm on hard packed (on the BFGs).  Plus I don't want to ruin the rims.

I ran into the same issue with the Armada.  All the Blizzacks were sold out in the big LT sizes when I acquired it.  Settled for Hankook I Pike which suck on the hard snow pack.  Seems if you want the Blizzacks in the big sizes purchase in May or June.

I would second the Vredestein Pinta AT for a winter AT tire. I've run Continental TerrainContact AT on the Escalade for the last 5 years, all year around, zero complaints....Now, I am in the GTA where conditions are not as bad as other places, but in 5 winters and just about every type of road condition possible, it's never gotten out hand or made me question the decision. They're down to maybe 40-50% now, with about 60K on them, so I'll probably replace them in another year or so, and will probably buy another set of the same. I really like them because they're dry-road manners are really good, quiet, comfortable, and they don't look super aggressive - which would be a weird look on the Escalade with chrome 20's.

If I wasn't concerned about them looking too aggressive I'd be tempted to try the Cooper ATW or AT3s....Both are rated very well for winter performance, and appear to have lots of sipping.

Firm Jr and I braved the cold (it was really only -5) today and did an oil change on the new MGB....Noticed that the oil pressure at idle was a tad low, and found a jug of the wrong grade (5W20) oil in the trunk. Changed it for the correct grade (20W50) and pressure is right up where it should be....friggin people. 5W20, lol.

More impressively, damn car fired up instantly at -5C....not a lot of MGB's around that'll do that. Whoever setup the carb/auto choke last knew what they were doing.

Nice!!

Oil grade can really make a difference on older cars.

To their credit Crappytire has always provided Quaker State 20W50.

lol, I regularly joke with the Manager for the line that he'd better not drop it! It still sells pretty well though, so I think it's safe for now.

Do you find 20W grade oil thin enough for winter start-ups?

Yeah, no issues...Car/engine was designed for it. My mom ran her MGB year round up until 2016ish and it never had any issues starting in the cold, always on 20W50.

Called the shops for both cars this week.  Good times.

The Golf is giving a low coolant warning now that the temperatures have dropped. The water pumps are known to leak right around this mileage. VW went with a variable flow rate pump to improve warm up times, the replacement is a fixed impeller.

And I'm pretty sure the CV joint in the Highlander just :censor: the bed.  I've been getting a clicking noise when turning right for a while now and all of a sudden got way worse and I now hear a clunking noise when applying throttle.
