New winter tires installed, oil/filter change, wheel alignment.

In the end I checked under the dash and retorqued a 10mm and 12mm bolt on the intermediate steering shaft (clamp around splines). 5 minutes of time and zero cost. Bingo!

Another thing learned today, never would have thought of that

Whenever it’s a simple fix for something I always remember the movie Slingblade and the part about diagnosing why a lawn mower didn’t work.

Put the winters on the GTI and snapped off the end of one of the locking lug bolts. And can’t even blame a shop monkey for putting them on too tight, as I was the last one to do them (and with a torque wrench to 90 lb*ft, I might add.)

I guess the rust is finally starting to catch up with this thing - it was a :censor: getting half the bolts out.

Anyway, had to go to Canadian Tire for a bolt extractor. They had a 5-piece kit on sale for $17.99, but it was too small. 30-piece kit for $49.99 looked like a good deal, but sold out. Ended up paying $59.99 for a bigger 5-piece kit, but at least it worked.

Rolled over 300,000  kms in the  truck while hauling Fiona debris.
Yes it reads 166,500 ,instrument cluster was replaced by recall at 133,500.

Try and catch up. ;D

What did it have when you got it ? I 've put about 60 k on it from when I had first  bought it.
I'll certainly try.

Fun times wrenching an older car and here I thought that crap only happens to me.  ;)

I ran my washer fluid empty and thinking that I might have fried the pump.

Of course now the washer tank is now full.

$38 from rockauto isn't the worst.  Sucks that I replaced this one two and a half years ago. Lesson learned.

I was looking at the rotors when I had the wheels off, and damn they’re in ugly shape. I should really do a cheap brake job before I try to sell it in the spring, but that sure isn’t going to fun.  :P

^^ Yeah, I remember a thread here about Maxbrake a while ago. Will definitely check them out.

Probably wouldn’t go that route if I was keeping the car, but I just need something that looks shiny and is cheap.  :)

Yea, if you wanted something for spirited driving, look elsewhere.

Completely fine for daily driving duties.

and now my new control arm sounds like an owl when it is rebounding. At least I think it is the control arm as it didn't make that noise until my new dodgy one was replaced. I swear I am being punked. ;D

Not ready to give up on the older vehicles yet?  ;D

I’m officially over the GTI. Will hopefully just have one last adventure with the brake job, then it’s sayonara! Really looking forward to the Crosstrek, as crazy as that may sound.

the noise sounds exactly like a poly bushing would when they act up. The family(?) crosstrek is scheduled to arrive in March although I have my doubts. The Ridgeline will likely end up in my sons hands. I may buy back my old 2002 Dakota that has been through me, my brother, two of my nephews. It may be time for it to come home.  It likely needs struts. ;D

I'm already having second thoughts about the brake job. I last did them in 2015 and even then I remember it being a PITA. I think with another seven years of rust it's going to be an absolute nightmare.

I wouldn't be surprised if it costs a grand to have them done at a shop though. Calipers may very well be fooked at this point too.  :P

It drives fine and there's still some pad left, so I suppose I could just leave it be and take the hit on resale when I go to sell it in the spring.
