Thanks, of everything I own I spend the most time in the DTS, it's been a very good car to have around, no complaints.

This week's car related nonsense was the Escalade needing a windshield. Being a Northern Alberta truck, I am sure the windshield in it was far from it's original, but it was in good shape with no peppering or scratches on it. Anyway, it randomly developed a tiny crack dead center at the top sometime in the summer. I figured it would get bigger, but months went by and it didn't, so I kinda forgot about it....Till one day last week where it cracked vertically top-to-bottom. Still not sure what caused the initial crack, but w/e....

My brother recommended a glass place as they'd done his SLK and XKR in the past, so I called them up, $275 seemed like a very fair price, so I made an appointment and Mrs.Firm took it in. Got it back, work looks good, except there's a push pin in the center of the plastic wiper cowl missing....Pull out my shoebox sized box of Dorman pins and clips and spend 30 minutes out in the dark/cold trying to find the right one....no luck. Spend another hour researching to identify the right one. Then sent Mrs.Firm to the dealership to get some. $275 + about 2.5 hours of combined effort + another $6 at the dealer, and all is right again.

Lots of effort because some clown at the glass shop lost/broke/forgot a push pin.....

The boy lost the gas cap from the Tercel so I'll be sourcing a replacement. It needed a headlight and tail light so showed the middle how to replace. Super easy on the Tercel.

I did that on the Supra FFS.....left the cap on the deck and drove away.

After that, switched to a Stant Instant Fill cap and never had to worry about it.

I'm surprised the car didn't blow away.

This was from yesterday in Toronto. We don't build things that big here in Cambridge.

Sent it to my indie...just called him - sounds/looks like it might be transfer case. Damn.  ::) >:( :'( (guess I should stop playing Colin McRae  :P :-[)

At 80 kmh it makes this groaning noise - slower, and it doesn't, faster, and it also goes away.  Although this AM I did notice I could kinda hear it faintly at 100 kmh too.  It's also cold as hell out there.  But I was parked in the garage.  They stethoscoped all the ujoints and axles and bearings, and all's good...except the transfer case.  So they dip into the oil, and it's got that look like metallic paint.

Not the first one he's seen he says...but considering my kms and everything else being good, he still wants to make sure, and he'll let me know.

New one is something like $1600 - figures he can get a used one for a few hundred.  If I went new, not the end of the world.  Worth 30% of the car, but it'll bring my total to around $1000-2000 spent in 9~ years on out of service fixes.  Not so bad...could be an FGC, and that's what?  Every 3-6 months?

Part of me is wondering if it's those Max brakes.  They make virtually the same noise when coming to a stop as the car makes at 80 kmh.  So last night on the way home, I did 4 or 5 hard brake checks, and it's not smooth at all, sort of like if you had an old rubber/foam gasket and were trying to use it to stop.  I pulled into the garage, closed the door, got out and holy Helsinki...smelled like I just did a big ol' burnout.  Hot rubber...brake pads aren't made of rubber are they?  Smelled nasty, came back 5 minutes later to make sure the car wasn't burning.  I think I'm going to do that some more today...might as well burn those fackers to the ground if they're shyte.  Hope they last 'til spring and then replace with real solid rotors and real pads.

And maybe it's still the t-case...clear oil but metallic can't be right, right?

Sounds like you're trying to do an Italian tune-up

More like a Mennonite tune-up 'round here.  Same idea, only it's in Plaut-dietsch, but just as cheap.  For some things I have an aversion to spending money.  :P

Don't think that's a good thing in a transfer case. Brass in a gearbox from syncro wear is expected but you are probably looking at bearing metal. I know one of our neighbors had to get the transfer case (PTO) replaced in his older Edge

Myself I had another oil leak to deal with, in the Vibe this time. Thought it was the oil filter and changed it, turned out to be the oil pressure sender that's screwed into the block just above the oil filter. Easy to change once I got the 24mm deep socket it needed, part itself was $15.00 on Amazon.

Apparently fairly common on these engines, was talking to another of my neighbors and his Corolla did the same thing
