So his cap extends into the area where the tailgate closes blocking those bolts??

Wow!!

Bad design with no access holes.

How about using a hole saw on the edge of the cap to expose  where the bolt heads are?

The only access holes inside the cap are for the mounting hardware for the cap itself.

Curious poll for you guys : How long do your spark plugs last ?

Coming up on the 2 year service mark for my 308, and the app says I'm due for new spark plugs at 50k.

Perhaps I'm used to the long service intervals for FGCs, but that seems kind of short. Not really a huge deal, I think I can do it myself- they're super-easy to access, not even an engine cover on the THP engine !

Back in the good old days  ;) it was new Champions at 10,000 miles or once a year.   That was leaded gas and carbs of course.

The plugs in the Q5 were replaced at the 55,000 km service.

The plugs in the Highlander are original. 12 years and 176k km.

According to the maintenance schedule they're due to be replaced at 192k km.  I might get them done in the spring.

It depends on the plugs.

Iridium plugs can last a long, long time.

Coppers in the Saab lasted no longer than 10k.

Other cars have/had platinums, and always changed long before they were becoming a problem. Dunno how long they would have lasted.

Can older Iridium plugs have an impact on performance and fuel consumption? My thinking is that unless there are driveability issues they're probably fine

Yes, but the drop off would be subtle. The electrode and strap gap can get larger over time...

Wouldn't surprise me then that it's a contributor to the terrible mileage the Highlander is getting.  By no means the main one though, the cold and driving patterns are what's really killing it.  19.5L/100km the last tank!

When I changed the plugs on Bella's 323i, I couldn't believe how the old ones had wore down & how large the gap had become on them. I thought the new ones weren't gaped correctly because the old ones had such a large gap   Might be worth a try, can you get at the rear bank easily enough?

Nope. It's a massive PIA.  Was gonna bring it to my indy to get it done.

Did you notice a change in performance when you swapped them out?

Yes, car ran much smoother afterwards. Not sure about the mileage as it's Bella's DD, she's not religious on resetting the computer read outs  :rofl2:

I think what I'll do in the spring is pull the front plugs out and see how they look.  If the are fine I'll probably just put them back in and change at the recommended mileage.  The forums seem to suggest that the OEM Denso Iridiums are good plugs.

Here's a DIY for the rear bank. It's not pretty - https://www.toyotanation.com/forum/122-highlander-2nd-generation-2008-2013/413790-diy-2gr-fe-v6-spark-plug-replacement.html
