Hi guys, one thing I don't get - what about the CR-V black death (a/c compressor bust-up) issue?  Is that over or still a looming issue? Some folks report having to shell out $1500 bucks every few years to have this fixed - some have mentioned amounts closer to $4000!  As far as I know, RAV4 has no such serious long-term recurring issue, right?

If that's still a potential factor, it should be a factor of this comparison, yes?

We don't usually factor in reliability - the RAV4 was an entirely new model when this test happened, so judging reliability without any concrete information would be far too speculative. Our considerations are its primary function and operation as observed, rather than research into other potential ownership costs or concerns.

Possibly.  Happened to my buddy with just 1000 km on his brand new CRV a couple of months ago.

What is this black death issue?

The compressor clutch fails and allows "black oil" to contaminate the entire AC system.  Every component must be replaced, perhaps save for the hard lines.

I've had brake and suspension issues, but the engine and interior haven't caused me any concern. The transmission feels like the harshest of the early dual-clutch sequential manuals even though it's an automatic... my GTI VR6 was much more reliable. just wear issues like clutch (too early because of hard use) and wheel bearings... but it's starting to show rust. at this point I think i've gone beyond the point of no return and plan to keep it until its bitter death, then see where we are at that point...  still leaning to first-gen Mazda5 post-suspension issues.

I personally would drive a refrigerator if it were the most reliable.  Priority #1 for me is to keep up to date on oil changes, get in my car, turn the key and drive, EVERY day.  That being said, I'm not so sure what's so confusing about the Rav4's interior.  I've been driving one for a year and a half now.  I see the CRV styling as 80's AMC Pacer meets Pontiac Aztec. My brother owns the 2013 CRV. The CRV's interior to me is like walking into your Grandma's kitchen.  It's neat and clean but clearly is dated.  You're right that both are fine vehicles but there's obviously some CRV bias there, as not everyone sees the CRV styling as desirable. I always call it the big butt car.

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for sharing.

Reliability should certainly be a consideration for anyone making a purchase as sizeable as a new vehicle.  For us, we're unable measure reliability in any meaningful or long term way during a week-long review of a vehicle, so it would be unfair for us to report on it.

As for "some CRV bias" here, well, uhh, no.  I've owned as many Toyotas as I have Hondas (1 each) and hold both companies in equally high regard, especially for their ability to make well-engineered, long-lasting products.

On the other hand, you've had 13 consecutive Toyotas?  Maybe a bit of bias there?   ;)
