Yeah, WTF was with that?  The movie had a great premise, and could have been awesome.  They needed to make Jing Tian's character Lin Mae the lead, and make the tone more serious - these people are defending the entire world.  Maybe Keep Dafoe's character, but then make him the narrator and his character little more than existing in the background, hoping to be saved along with the rest of the human population.

Two recently watched movies that left me disappointed were Baby Driver and the Hit Man's Bodyguard.  I was also unimpressed with The Great Wall.
It must be an age thing.  :P

I didn't mind Hitman's Bodyguard...maybe I'm a few years younger  ;D

Last night I watched Goon 2: Last of the Enforcers.  Sean William Scott deserves an Emmy for that...for playing Sean William Scott so well...I wonder if there is anyone else who can play stupid so straight faced.  Couple of my favorites are when his wife kicks him out...she has a packed bag and he asks "where are you going to stay?" Not me.  He reaches in the bag, takes a can of soup..."but this is the soup I eat"  And then he gets it...

Or when all the players are kissing him on the cheeks in the hospital after they had the baby...and he's air kissing...the air.  So dumb... I'd like to see the outtakes.

I honestly didn't know SWS still was getting gigs...good for him to find work I guess

Watched 'Ghost in the Shell' yesterday, enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Sort of a Hongkong Sci-fi western.

Likewise, I saw it recently and expected it to pale in comparison to the original, but I was pleasantly surprised. Very enjoyable.

The anime is waay better.
agreed

I have only seen the original anime version (actually have a copy) so I can't comment but your sentiments echo what I've heard.  Now that the live action version is on Netflix, I will watch it and compare.

Bon Cop Bad Cop 2.  I loved the American cops...every time an American show does Cdn cops, it's always RCMP in full red regalia...out in the bush or on the road...(I'm looking at you Shameless  >:() like blundering fools, eh? Abbot, and all that crap.  Well...the scene with the cops from Maine...fecking hilarious.  I liked the whole movie, but that was a good bit.  Even poking fun at the bastardized French (Canadians) from Quebec.  I'd say worth it.

Saw Three Billboards outside Ebbing Montana last night.  I thought it was really good, and the fact that in the end not everything is all neatly tied up and explained was an unexpected bonus.

We went to The Shape of Water.  Not the kind of movie I normally go for, but wow, it's really well done.  I'm not sure if there was anyone other than Sally Hawkins in mind for the lead role, but if so, they went the right way going with her.  She just nailed it.  Some of the plot lines are a little cliched, but that works with the retro-film look and 60s setting.

Finally got to watch Blade Runner 2049 last night and found it to be a big letdown.  Technically it was a good film for the most part, but I found the soundtrack was way over done and no where near the quality of the original score by Vangellis that was near perfection.  Also, at 164 minutes it was just too long and i actually fell asleep for a few minutes toward the end.  I had reservations going in as sequels rarely do it for me and this one just didn't resonate with me at all.

I was a big fan of the original BR and is one of the few movies i actually purchased.  This new one left me flat.

felt the opposite, thought it was a fantastic film that paid homage but didnt blatantly pander to the original. It didn't suffer from sequel-itis like so many other titles these days.

Agree with ChaosphereIX on this one except for one point:  the soundtrack.  There are moments when the music comes out VERY loud.  Booming single notes sustained over several seconds almost deafened me.  No doubt they were there to emphasize some point but they were out of balance and over the top IMHO.  Vangelis had a better grip, methinks, on the mood and tone.

Other than that, Bladerunner 2049 was excellent.

Watched the CNN documentary "Trophy" about trophy hunters.  I was swearing aloud at the TV for the whole two hours.

For some things.

Hopefully it gets released to DVD or something.
