Finished watching the new 4 hour documentary Rolling Stone: Stories From the Edge by Alex Gibney, about the last 50 years of the magazine.

If you have any interest in politics, culture, music, photography or writing, this is a must see. It's absolutely fantastic and I very highly recommend it.

That was excellent.

Watched a couple Netflix movies the other day, 'The Babysitter' and 'True Memoirs of an International Assassin'.

No Oscar winners but both pretty entertaining.

I was very pleasantly surprised watching Florence Foster Jenkins starring Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg last night. I thought the writing was excellent. Streep is always first-rate, and Grant really upped his game IMO. But I thought the real unsung hero was Simon Helberg.

It is not a blockbuster that you might buy, but it is definitely worth borrowing from your local library or wherever.

Watched Justice League last night.  The plot seems so similar to the Avengers.  I preferred the Avenger movies, but that's probably cos I liked the actors better.  JL was enjoyable, albeit a little hammy in parts.

Takashi Miike is my favorite director.  I think he's amazing. On one hand, he can make the most horrifying, disturbing, nightmare inducing and mentally scarring movies you'll EVER watch (which is how I stumbled onto him many years ago). Seriously, you need to be mentally ready to watch some of his hard core, bizarre, intense, violent movies. And you'll have a hard time processing (and forgetting) what you've just watched. You would think this guy has serious issues by some of the content in these movies.

On the other hand, he makes some of the most beautiful and engaging "traditional" samurai and yakuza movies (though these are rather violent). I think some here really enjoyed his beautifully made 13 Assassins (I know I did).

So I watched his latest this weekend. Sword of the Immortal....one of his samurai movies. The script isn't super original. It's about a samurai who has been cursed with immortality and is doomed to a life of regret. He meets a young girl who seeks revenge on the gang of samurai who killed her father. And away the story goes..

This movie is based on a manga book series, so there werea few subtle ways the scenes change...like when you're reading a comic. Subtle..But I noticed. The fight scenes as expected are frequent and brutal and often over the top as is his style...but very well shot...and all his foes different in their skills, weapons etc. Again, nothing too ground breaking, but it sorta leaves you wondering what the next bad guy will be like.

It seemed a bit longer than it needed to be...But not terribly so since it was done so well.

All in all, I liked it. And would recommend it. And I think anyone who enjoys these types of movies would enjoy it too.

Mrs. Random and I went to see “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri” on the weekend.

Excellent film, with Frances McDormand offering a tour de force as the protagonist.

It’s a film for adults, full of shades of grey and very little black or white kind of thinking.  Just when you think you’ve figured out where they might go with the story, they surprise and delight you with nuance.

A blockbuster this ain’t and that’s a good thing.

Go see it.

That film is AMAZING.  Best film I have seen in ages.  Saw it on Thursday.
I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

It's certainly amusing in parts.  Sometimes a bit disturbing.  But always thought-provoking, and definitely engaging.

Took the kids to see Thor while the wife finished up Christmas shopping.  Feckin' hilarious.  I'd see that again.  Worth every penny of the price of entry.  Can't wait for it to hit the $5 bin at Wal Mart!
