E39 5 Series, not necessarily an M5, even an 540i M-Sport would be awesome, of course with a 6spd manual.

Seconded. Although the F10 is likely to turn out the same way, IMO.

I still miss my 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300SD.

Over 300,000 km and still had life left in it. Old man tan with matching tan interior. Lovely.

my friend's dad had a 96 or 97 s-class, and it was truly a nice car.  literally felt like civilian tank.

i think a lot of the big benz have the potential to be timeless.

Yup. The W140 was, in my eyes, the last truly great S-Class. My uncle paid something like $35,000 for it when it only had 15-16K on it and I used it as my winter beater for a few years while doing my undergrad. My '09 E-Class is wonderful, but does lack the character (and fuel mileage) of the 300SD.

I don't know...most replys seem to me not to be about real cars...too expensive...not practical and in no way timeless. Cars are hard to consider as timeless. They start to loose value as soon as you drive them out of the showroom and the shape is only current for a year or two. But there are a few that made an impression and one of these, I never owned or drove, only an impression; still a strong one. Longevity is an admired attribute in everything I think...even a refridgerator that works uncomplainingly for years. The Volvo 122 was around for 13 years as a current model and I admired it very much. Rode in a friends a few times and they were as tough as nails and felt very stable with good power from a 2L twin carb engine. Overdrive made highway travel easier.
It was a feature of the landscape for quite a while and nothing temporary or throw away about it...and then it was gone. Have not seen my old friend for years now but the last time I did he still had one. Loyalty has to be earned. Don't have a picture.

Hmmm The younger of my two  Rollers looks timeless and if properly maintained will last a lonnnng time. And not too exorbitant to buy either.  Not exactly economical tho'

My 1990 Miata.  24 years old, 310,000 km, original engine and transmission, still running like a champ.  It does not leak either ;D

Lots of dough and ourageous speed and HP don't matter here. The trick is to make something that the masses can aspire to, that becomes beloved by owners and others, for it's everyday value and reliability. I am suprised that a Volvo 122 would initiate rudeness and yet a Datsun 510 not so. What is that about. Anyway the Datsun 510 was indeed a great  'affordable' car in the later sixties and had a good following back then and a jiant killer. So too now the Miata has proven to be a winner and being a sportscar may be timelss more easily I suppose like the MGB. So too is the Mini in both its concept and later itterations...a breakthrough design that changed everything and brought cars to folk who only had bicycles prior to. The Fiat 500 may well be one too and the 50s Lancia Aurelia in a diferent category. The VW is timeless in rear engine form.
There are others of course that many people could formulate a picture of in their minds but not most of the swoosh vehicles above. They would not even be recognised by most motorists even in their own time and who would know what a Mk. of Rolls even looked like or for most a Ferarri 250 GTO, or the distinguishing features of a Mk. of Mercedes. And yet the GTO would probably be iconic and timeless. All everyday cars can not be driven for many years; they age and become non-viable and are scrapped except for a very few. So that all that is left are memories of them and times when you were younger and pictures that you carry in your head. Few would even recognise most of the above posted photo's even a couple of years after they were made. That makes them irrelevant as well as not being timeless. Hmm I suppose the Mustang could be included. In a time when the Jellybean reigns I will not appologise for choosing one from the past that was not such. The 122.

Rupert I agree about the Volvo 122 ( and the 240 a bit later)  and of course the mini.  The 510 had the unfortunate habit of rusting away faster than you could make the payments although it was a BMW 2002 competitor.

For a throwback to the sixties I'd choose Wiessmann.

Perfick!

Good call on the Morgan. I hope to own the latest three wheeler at some point.

It's only 36 grand (in the States)! (The 3)

I know....  No idea what they will go for used though.

You never seen a Weismann before Snowy?  They are very nice.
