Timeless car, What would be yours?
« on: February 10, 2013, 08:01:49 am »
i was thinking about cars the other day(what a surprise,  ;D) and my thoughts turned to this particular categories of car : timeless.

a lot of us agree that Porsche 993, Shelby Cobra and such are quite possibly timeless, in that they still look very very cool.

But what about regular everyday car?

say, something that you would still use everyday, 10 years from now and still would think, 'yeah, i made a right choice getting this one'.  something that would sit beside its modern counterparts in the parking lot and wouldn't look or feel out of place.

This is not just about design though. (exterior and interior)
Car industries design language ebbs and flows just like everything else in the world, but nowadays, i find myself thinking that cars today feel like a throw away products.  just like all other consumer goods such as iPods.   i have 3 iPods that i don't use.   :-[  and it's not because they are broken. still works perfectly fine, but they are outdated.

so i'm trying to find a timeless everyday car.  something that may not be the most beautiful, but is engineered impeccably and built wonderfully so that it would pass the test of time.

What would you buy?

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

My favorite daily driver is still a E60 M5. BMW should have kept the Chris Bangle era going.

W124 Mercedes Benz   They still look good to me in spite of the design being 25+ years old.

I'll second Sailor's choice above. I'd consider the G Wagon...it earns its timelessness by already looking 30 years old...hard to guess the age of one of these.

Also, the S2000 has aged extremely well. Would hardly look dated if it was still on sale today...plus its tech, performance and quality still hold up. Pretty remarkable. Honda had a good day when they designed that one. It's easy to be underwhelmed with a lot of new cars when you think about the S2K.

I may be biased, but I think the styling of my NB Miata is pretty timeless.

E46 sure is good looking.

Bangle design sure is looking better and better as they age.   and one can't argue with V10..    This is actually the car that got me thinking about timeless car.

Beetle.  Still enjoy driving mine each day in the daily commuter grind.  (not that I'm grinding my gears on the manual).

E39 5 Series, not necessarily an M5, even an 540i M-Sport would be awesome, of course with a 6spd manual.

The early '70's Datsun 510.

A very practical car that almost anyone from that era could enjoy.  If you wanted a small commuter car, this would fill the bill.  Easy to drive, cheap on gas and of course, reliable.
If you were a young stud with not a lot of money to burn, this car could be tricked out very nicely, and it could put a few American cars in their place.

Definitely a very successful forerunner to today's Civic, Mazda3 and Corolla.

I still miss my 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300SD.

Over 300,000 km and still had life left in it. Old man tan with matching tan interior. Lovely.

my friend's dad had a 96 or 97 s-class, and it was truly a nice car.  literally felt like civilian tank.

i think a lot of the big benz have the potential to be timeless.
