I have the same app so I'll give the Sebring a try this weekend.

Interesting topic, don't remember much discussion here about interior noise in terms of empirical data.

Initially I was thinking that since dB is a logarithmic scale that a 3dB increase in background noise would be twice as loud. However, I did some reading that suggested that a 3dB increase barely perceptible to the human ear.

http://www.noisequest.psu.edu/pmwiki.php?n=Noise101.Basics

Curious if anyone has any experience in this field to educate us one how much of an increase in noise level is really significant.

What is WFO?

I'll do a test this afternoon. I hate driving on American Interstates, so freaking loud!

I read the reviews on that app and the permissions - it wants wifi state and network state so I assume advertising?

There seems to be varying degrees of accuracy, i.e. 50db in a quiet room with no noise and a maximum of around 80-90 or so no matter how loud.

"A Google User - November 30, 2012 - Version 1.4.7
Bulls***

App, my system pumps 120 db of sound that I know for a fact (EPA and police measured) 5 metres outside my house , yet free version measures up to 80. Uninstalled."

Another app - "Noise Meter" has no advertising or permissions needed but has the same high rating with no noise and max of around 80-90.

So I didn't bother.

On the other hand the critical levels of over 85 db if measured incorrectly could damage your hearing.

From what I read somewhere - at higher levels - that 3db increase cuts the time in half that is safe.

i.e a rock concert or jackhammer at 100db is dangerous and has a maximum safe time. 3db more and that time is cut in half.

^^That's flat out wrong.  We have a a VERY expensive meter here at work as I said earlier, and I tested it right beside the app.  The "real" meter read 88....the cell phone app read 88.  When I walked outside, they were also both identical (about 60).

^^^ I guessed it was accurate based on what you wrote - up to 88db - but what about higher?

They seemed to suggest there may be a hardware limit of around 90.

Hang on...let me go pound a pice of steel with a hammer and see what number comes up....

**EDIT**  I got up to 94 dB pounding a large hammer on some steel.  I may have been able to go higher, but it was clear I was starting to annoy my co-workers... :rofl2:

What? My ears are ringing.

Do some more and compare so we can rely on 100db accuracy.

Heheheh.....my co-workers will go insane.  I don't need it to be accurate for 100+ dB.  As I said...although it might not be EXACTLY as accurate as a professional meter, it's pretty darn close...and close enough to use in a much quieter car.

I just installed the app and whistled into the microphone and it hard stopped at 90 on my nexus.

I actually have a professional DB meter around here someplace, I bought it when I was doing stereo installs.  But I to have compared it to apps on phones and they are identical.

Of course the meter offers more features and averages.

I'm not sure if I can screen grab a momentary burst.......??

**EDIT**  I just got it to 92....but on the min-max scale thing it stopped at 90.....Hmmmmmm

32 off sounds right.  65 at idle, huh?  Not exactly quiet.

Just downloaded the app I will test the Berlin taxi tomorrow.

As a baseline my wife is 65 db.
