How quiet is your car?
« on: February 06, 2013, 10:37:13 pm »
Ok..so last night at work, I was bore and was goofing around with a dB meter.  I wanted to test my car, but it's a no-no to take company equipment home.  So I looked for an app.  I installed the app on my phone and compared it with the real meter at work and the numbers came back identical.  So I decided to see how quiet my car was with various measurements.

1) Off    30 dB
2) Idle  40 dB
3) 80km/h 67 dB (this was on stone and tar road..might be quieter on blacktop?)
4 WFO 80 dB

Where I sit on the shop floor at work, it's 88 dB!

Anyone else ever do this?

Which app are you using?

Oh crap...yea I guess that might be important.

It's called "Sound Meter" from Smart Tools.   https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.sira.sound&hl=en

88 on your shop floor?  That's pretty noisy for a place to work for any period of time, the pulpmills want less than 85 at the loudest part of the plant.

I once had a 4000 rpm throttle blip in the Cobra measured by a friend with an iPhone app.  It hit 105 db.

That's the only time I ever had any of my cars' sound levels measured.

I don't know the actual #'s but coming from a full 3" equipped wrx to the acura cls6 - I can tell you it's spooky quiet. Probably my biggest pet peeve about the Acura!

I installed that app one night at my son's swimming lessons.  There were many classes all going on at the same time and it was pretty loud in there.  IIRC, I measured 92db.

I'll have to try it in the car later...

my bimmer,
in my parking pad, not started yet just sitting still  : 44 dB
at idle : 47~50 dB
at 110 steady cruise : 75 dB
my room : 41 dB

i find the m3 to be quieter on highway than VW Rabbit, so i'll measure that one later as well.   ;D

Autoweek measured this for a 2012 Mazda5:

NTERIOR NOISE (DBA)

Idle: 38

Full throttle: 71

Steady 60 mph: 68

I'm sure the previous gen. is close to that.   Engine and wind noise are very well managed in the Mazda5.  The only noise that really intrudes is road noise.  Just how quiet it is was one of the bigger surprises.

there is GOOD noise..BAD noise and just awful NOISE.....our opinions may differ.........good noise beautiful music, and a short burst of a magnificent engine WOT!!!,and a whisper in yer ear before coitus......

Bad noise too many to mention..but just reverse the above for a START!!! ;)

Awful noise unecessary above 70dB background crap.......e.g neighbour mowing lawn with a 2 stroke at 5pm on a nice Summer evening as you TRY TO RELAX....................Hi_way noise if U are an unfortunate bastard that lives near a 401 type road..........someone elses 8) crappy toons played loud to impress the neighbourhood/Park/adjacent drivers...................... :bang: ............just think how few moments of TRUE SILENCE we experience today....they are BLISS
Time is to stop everything happening at once

Next door neighbor doing vacuuming with central vacuum system that has a unsilenced, industrial level noise, outlet right next to your patio. You will not be friends.

It is loud.  At times it's quieter and other times it's louder I'm sure.

You should hear when we are testing an AC generator off of an L-188 Electra or a DHC-7 DC generator.....high pitched whine. Ear muffs help, but wow, it drills into your brainstem. I cant wait for the next time we have them here just so I can see how loud they really are.

Tried it in the forester on the way home:
idle:63
100km/h: 81
WOT: 89 (max, going through 2nd & 3rd)

The roads are so full of potholes, it was tough to find a smooth enough bit of road on the way home to do the steady 100km/h reading.
