Hmmm, so what would a typical range be for a bike?  I'm sure it depends on they type of bike, cruiser, dual sport, touring, etc.  How far would the longest range standard tank take you?

I've got a 15.4l tank and average a little over 5 l / 100km - so theretically 300km should be doable.  But just like with my car, I tend to fill up when I'm just below a quarter tank.  I'm weird that way.  :)  Some bikes have much bigger tanks, but they also tend to have more power and use more fuel - others will know far better than I what the maximum might be.

I used to get 220km out of the FZ-09, got 250km out of it once, looking for a gas station in rural PA.  :rofl2:

On the Triumph I can get about 275km, could probably stretch to 300km if I was really desperate.

Sounds like 300km is a pretty average range then.

I'd say 250km is about average. The Tiger has a large tank.

250kms was about it on my TU250X. I only came close to running out once. It was up north in BC. Massive wind against us and 230 kms between gas stations.

yea, likely 250-300 kms is likely average...while touring bikes have bigger tanks, they also have larger engines and weigh more, so it still evens out pretty similar...the new Yamaha XMax scooter (300cc) would likely get about 400 kms to a tank...it uses just over 3L/100kms and has a decent sized tank at 12.9L...but certainly isn't as fast or powerful as your bike is.

Aaaand the downside of a fuel gauge is.....?  ???  I mean, you car doesn't "need" a fuel gauge either - just keep an eye on your trip meter and know what your average range for a tank is.  If the low fuel warning light comes on, you still have a reserve - just go get gas, right?  I mean, why do we even bother?  ;D
What Ron & I are saying it's not a big deal to NOT have a gas gauge, we're both younger than you & sur-:censor:-vived.

Jeez, you guys never had a REAL bike then! (j/k)  My V-Max...160 kms - maybe 180 on a tank...go to Wpg, fill up before you go home.  ;D  Damn thing used tires almost as bad too.
Weird coincidence I figure.  :shuffle:

My small sport bikes all dropped to a dismal 200 km if I did 120 km/h+. In the city 300+ km easy.  My best tank was 361 km (3.2 L/100km) on the CBR 250R and 362 km (2.8 L/100km) on the CBR 125R.

Not a big deal not to have one on your car, either.  But similarly odd to exclude it.  I mean, my freaking lawn mower has a battery level indicator - and I find that useful, if not strictly "needed".

At least with a motorcycle that didn’t have a fuel gauge, you can open the gas cap and visually check roughly how much fuel is remaining. TCLOCK (tires controls lights oil chassis kickstand) doesn’t include fuel but the older acronym FINE-C (fuel ignition neutral engine-kill-switch choke) did.

yea...smaller, lightweight bikes don't need much power to get to about 80 km/hr (hence why scooters with sub 30 hp and sub 400cc engines get such solid fuel economy numbers)...once the speeds increase beyond that, the power required increases exponentially...air resistance, drag co-efficient and weight all play a role there.

It wasn't odd. It was normal. It wasn't a thing.

You're old enough to remember cars without ABS or other comforts. Didn't feel odd or strange...Was just the way it was at the time.

Same thing. Literally no one ever mentioned it let alone complained about it. Was normal at the time.

Plus an extra dial gauge (this is before digital) would have needlessly added weight to the sportbike. Sounds silly...But was part of their commitment to lightness.

Your problem is one of tense.  I was never referencing what WAS normal, but what makes sense NOW.

Too bad.  Also no fuel guage on any modern bike is pretty lol to me.  But pretty it has in spades.

So yeah - it's cool that you walked to school barefoot in the snow, and that's what all the kids did, and nobody thought it was odd.  It's not a choice I would embrace now.

I still would....

I wouldn't pass up an otherwise great bike for lack of a fuel gauge.

In other words..not a deal breaker for me.

I'd rather have a great bike with a fuel gauge. You get to make your own choices based on your own preferences. So do I. Neat, eh?

Even worse when I mark them with sharpie (litres) .. Stickers won't adhere due to plastic being porous. They are somewhat covered with shrouds but I really don't care. Function over fashion.  ;)

The Bonneville's gas warning light would come on at about 170 km...  by 200 km I'd be sweating to find a fill-up.  That bike was not great for touring.  My Z900 was pretty good -- around 250 + km, IIRC, and my g/f's old ZX6 will do 300 km if we're touring and not rippin' on it.

Transparent tanks FTW!  lol

Those are so ugly..lol. Have to buy alot of stickers to cover them.

Theres a local guy with a DRZ (??) with a massive plastic tank, looks terrible. I get the function, but gees man, a gauge seems like a much better idea.
Lighten up Francis.....
