In Alberta you take the written Class 6 exam. Then you can ride with another full Class 6 supervising. Then Class 6 road test - after that you can ride alone.
Ontarios makes much more sense

I rode to my Class 6 road test by myself, took it, failed it (a total rip off btw - dude says I rolled a stop sign. Ummm ... no. My feet were on the ground - I'd know if I rolled it) then rode home solo.  :rofl2:
I too think drivers tests here are now somewhat of a scam.

Seems like many people fail their first try for some nebulous reason like you...then magically pass the second attempt.

Cash grab?
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Absolutely. I think they were privatized in AB at the time and the quality was ... variable. I did not have an inside hook up anywhere so just went into the closest one.

The tester had the balls to tell me after "don't worry I fail everyone the first time around, but I gave you a free lesson". Ugh. Really? I took time off work then paid $80 or so AND you taught me nothing. Super annoying.

Can't you get a written learners at any time, and then ride (with certain restrictions)?

It's been a while, but from what I remember I didn't get my full motorcycle license for some time

Note, this only applies to Alberta.

You only need the learners to do the Class 6 exam. Your Class 5 acts as a learners license as long as you have a Class 6 supervisor.

Yeah, I drove to Vancouver and back from northern Alberta with my learners (likely not recommended :)). Also spent a summer commuting in England with a scooter, so that must have worked there too

Oops I thought you were going for your motorcycle license for whatever reason!

Well..seems like it is a scam in Ontario!

They sure made lots of money. Seems to me the only way they make money is if people do tests multiple times?

"In 2003, licensing services were contracted out to Britain’s Serco Group, which it would be responsible for presiding over road tests, vision tests, and written examinations. The contract was awarded for $114-million and Serco Group generated revenues well in excess of $500-million over their decade-long tenure."

I think I failed mine at least twice, maybe three times. They were all fair fails though.

Despite having ridden a dirt bike for years the 550 streetbike I'd bought was a hunk of crap in the little course they had set up. Tall first gear, lean carb, soft front forks

Talking to a buddy after who'd bought a Gold Wing, the key was to borrow something like a Honda 100 for the actual test

I rode a 250 for my class 6 exam. Reason why below.

In BC, for people who already have a Class 5:

1. Get Class 6 learners license and have the following restrictions:
  • Must ride with supervisor
  • Maximum speed 60 km/h
  • Sunrise to sunset only
  • No passengers
2. Pass the motorcycle skills test after 14 days (no waiting period when taking a certified course) and have the following restrictions:
  • Sunrise to sunset only
  • No passengers
3. Pass Class 6 exam after 30 days to get full Class 6 license. There may be restrictions based on the motorcycle used for the class 6 exam:
  • If you did the exam with an automatic transmission, you are restricted to riding automatics.
  • If you did the exam on a three wheeler, you are restricted to riding trikes and sidecar equipped motorcycles.
  • If you did the exam on something smaller than a 200cc engine, you are not allowed passengers.

For riders who have a Class 7L or 7N graduated drivers license or no license:

1. Get a Class 8L learners license and have the following restrictions:
  • Must ride with supervisor
  • Maximum speed 60 km/h
  • Sunrise to sunset only
  • No passengers
2. Pass the motorcycle skills test after 14 days (no waiting period of taking a certified course) and have the following restrictions:
  • Sunrise to sunset only
  • No passengers
  • For a 16 year old, this is a way for them to get around unsupervised (on two/three wheels only) since there's no way to remove the supervisor restriction with the Class 7L
3. Pass Class 8N exam after 6 months to get Class 8N license.
4. Pass either the Class 5 or 6 exam after 24 months to graduate into a full Class 5 and 6 license holder. Same restrictions may apply above.

Is it perfect?

Or in need of restoration?

Interesting/special bike IMO.

It's far from perfect, but it doesn't really need restoration.  Let's say it has patina.

they don't do it this way here any more, but when i took my test, they had a "track" set up behind the building...like a mini street...it was literally just an easy ride around the "block", stop at the stop sign, ride over the open area, drive up between the pylons, turn around at the end, drive back through the pylons and stop at the end...it takes less than 2 minutes...essentially, as long as you stop at the stop points you are supposed to and don't fall/drop the bike, you passed...honestly, it was kind of a joke.

to make it even more unfair, the place i bought my scooter from loaned my their demo scooter, a Honda Elite 125.

Not much.  Mine is probably worth $3-4k.   Maybe more if I shined it up after a certain movie comes out.

Took my test on a 82 RD350. Kick start 2 stroke lol. Soon traded up to  a 84 Suzuki ES1150EF which was another learning curve.  Anyone looking to get into motorcycles should start with a trials bike IMO. Anyhow perhaps easiest bike to road test would be a Yamaha  TW200?

The Honda 150s we had for the course would be perfect for the test, absolutely easy to control

Yes, I think a small dual sport is ideal to test on.
