Focus ST Features Adjustable Engine Roar
« on: October 09, 2012, 07:37:25 am »

For Ford drivers, life in the fast lane has become life in the quiet lane as engineers raise the bar for refinement by cutting noise and improving soundproofing.

My 2008 GTI has a "sound pipe" that channels induction noise to the cabin.   A deeply dumb idea imho.

I kinda like the sounds tubes.  Most cars I have been in, it gives a nice sound.  An adjustable sound tube, like mentioned here, seems to be a bit too much over engineering.

I think it's fine, turn the sound down in daily driving mode, turn it up in Fast & Furious mode.

Its an ST......shouldnt this thing thing pop, his and roar anyways. Youre buying a hot hatch, not something that granny is going to get her blood pressure pills in. The fact that manufacturers, for the most part and thats why I am enamoured with AMG, have removed cars voices. Listen to a Chevelle with a big block, or a Porsche 911 2.7RS, hell, even an Dodge Omni GLH-S, they all had very distinctive exhaust notes....today, nothing.
Lighten up Francis.....

it's called "my foot".  :rofl2:  or more specifically, my right foot.

whenever i jam my right foot down to the floor, it growls and whines.

if i don't, it's just a nice drony sound.

Of course it should!    lumpy cams, lots of ignition advance, no EGR, high compression, no cat converter. That is what it SHOULD have. Blame the grey people... that is greenish grey actually.

I was thinking of the old Ford RS200, Cosworth Escort, Cosworth Cortina and such cars had personality.....this seems like the most bland fast Ford.

iTunes should sell downloadable sound tracks so people can make their car sound like any other car...or a train...or airplane. Then somebody can make an app that matches the audio to your actual engine speed and Voila! You can pretend anything you want.

They have that app, check it out on youtube. You can make your Caravan sound like a F40, 911 or a muscle car.....kind stupid, but to each his own.

I don't mind the idea for this type of car - it's an ST, not an RS.

Same with my GTI (it has a sound pipe, too, although not an adjustable one). When I want to have fun, it's nice to have some engine noise. But, when I've got the cruise control set for 120, and a 5-hour freeway drone ahead of me, it's nice to have a well-soundproofed cabin where I can relax and enjoy the stereo. And, like it or not, it's the latter that makes up most of my real-world driving.

I don't know about the Cossie but the Mk1 & Mk2 Lotus Cortinas made all the pops and crackles you could ever wish for, as did my Lotus with essentially the same engine. But being small 4s  and with, by todays standrads quite low rev limits they were not that noisy on acceleration until they were out of sight in the distance  ;)

Nowadays there are in the EU for sure some quite stringent "drive past noise" laws

wow... i just don't understand some of the features on cars... i've heard about the audio system "emphasizing" the engine... read: make vroom vroom noises to make you think you aren't driving a POS.

seems like one company will try this while another is soundproofing everything possible to make it a practical sound vacuum...

when i was selling dodge a while back and they first came out with the srt-4 based on the neon, it was so nice to listen to. just straight cat-back exhaust.... now that rumbled nicely for a four cyl.

anywho...
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

As I get older, my tolerance for a loud car gets less and less. That Mustang GT with the aftermarket exhaust is awesome for a couple days. Every day in traffic, not so much.
