Are you looking for a different size tire?  215/55R17 is your tire size.  It would depend your car and how har you can downsize.  I can't get to a tire calculator right now, but 205/65R16 sounds like it could work.

I need to pick up some new winter tyres - the wheel size is 215/55R17. What size would you recommend? I'm looking at WS70, General Altimax and XIce3, but I haven't checked pricing yet. Thanks

If you want separate wheels for winter use only, you may be able to minus size to a 16 or maybe a 15 inch wheel assuming it can clear the brake calipers. Check your vehicle with model and trim at Tirerack.com and look for alternative sizing under winter packages. Your wheel size is 17 inch. 215/55-17 is probably your stock tire size (check on the driver's side door label for confirmation).

If your car can take it, yes, downsizing does make a difference as having more sidewall allows the tire to flex more in the varying snow conditions/surfaces.  Downsizing a width is also a good idea.

Wow you're fast! Yes I'm wondering if I can downsize one to 16". Would downsizing to 16" make a huge difference in the snow? Or should I just stick to 17"?

I'm checking out various links but its all Greek to me.   :)

What is your exact vehicle, year, trim, FWD/RWD/AWD, # of cylinders? The biggest reason why most people minus size is cost....smaller wheels and tires cost less. Other consequences: Higher aspect ratio will result is less agile handling, but less likelihood of curb damage to the wheels. Tire Rack has good information on minus sizing.

215/60/16 is the size.  Essentially perfect fit.  You can use 215/65/16, but it will throw the mileage calculators off which are intense in that car.

2012 Camry Hybrid XLE - picking it up on Tuesday.

You finally did it.

Grey Mica, which is actual dark blue metallic.  How nutty is that?  :rofl2:

The LE Hybrid uses 205/65/16 so that size would be quite acceptable.

When you car is delivered, just make sure you have 40 psi in the tires.  Should be delivered that way, but you never know.  Consequently, you might want to shop for a winter tire that is rated at 44 psi.  The summer stock Michelins are rated 51 psi.

Costco is the best place I found for pricing on XI3's or Blizzaks.  The Blizzaks will be about $150 less per set.

For 2012 Camry Hybrid XLE Tirerack.com recommends a 205/65-16 with 215/60-16 as an alternate.

If I may butt in (after a long online absence) XIce3 is the way to go. IIRC they should have the lowest rolling resistance of the bunch = winter FE won't suffer as much and they also shine in many other test categories. Actually, Im gonna look them up....:

Look at how close the X-ice3 and WS-70 prices are!  Michelin Canada has decided to hose us, I suppose.

Don't just use the top rating for the Xi2 and Xi3 as a guide for buying any winter tire....look into the detailed breakdown of the scoring.

Xi2 and Xi3 are not that good for winters experienced in the Vancouver/victoria/Pacific Northwest area.....I think that tread pattern isn't open enough to allow wet, mushy snow to pass thru quickly enough....therefore, it doesn't do well in wet braking or hydroplaning as well.

when i bought my tires, WS70s and XI3s were $35 apart...that isn't that bad.

^^^Really?  $140 a set?  That's a pretty significant difference.  For tires of very similar performance.  It was over $200/set in the size for my Forester.

well, i agree it is more (which is why i went with the WS70s), but i went in for XI3s...still crossing my fingers that they will fit...i called the other dealership to confirm and they insisted on the fact the car came with 16s from the factory. ::)

man, if i owned the Kia dealership, we'd be the top game in town...great cars, great service, competitive prices and honest answers.

If you are downsizing just check with the dealer.

worse case scenario, they can dry fit them on...my dealer said the 15s would fit my car, but i'm not 100% sure they were right, because they didn't seem overly confident in saying they would.

i ordered my steelies today, so when they come in (likely a week or so), i will drop by and have them pull a wheel off and see if it fits...if it does, i'll get my wheels switched out and put the winter rubber on...if they don't, i will have to return everything and buy 16" stuff (which sucks, because it would be quite a bit more money).

Are the Dunlop Graspic ds3s any good? I can get those locally for a reasonable price. I expect the majority of my winter driving will be city/commuting with the occasional short highway run at 10
0-110km/h.

I'll soon be putting our DS-3's back on our Outback for the third season (hmm, or is it the fourth?). They aren't remarkable in any particular aspect but seem to be a good value and handled the occasional sloppy mess that we get for winter nowadays with no scary moments.  They do seem to sometimes get into a harmonic vibration if I go over 130kph in the right conditions, but I've had no real complaints.
