Are the Dunlop Graspic ds3s any good? I can get those locally for a reasonable price. I expect the majority of my winter driving will be city/commuting with the occasional short highway run at 10
0-110km/h.

Dunlop Graspic DS-3 ranked 14th of 16 winter tires in Nov 2012 issue of Consumer Reports:

Dunlop Graspic DS-3
 Snow traction: Very Good
 Ice braking: Very Good
 Dry braking: Poor
 Wet braking: Poor
 Handling: Fair
 Hydroplaning: Fair
 Ride comfort: Good
 Noise: Good
 Rolling resistance: Very Good
 Overall: 14th
2010 Ford Ranger FX4
Armaguard spray on liner
Truxedo Low Pro QT tonneau cover
Studded General Altimax Arctic P245/75-16 winter tires on black steelies

i don't get the hate on for steelies...alloys in the winter just doesn't make sense to me...seems like a waste of money.

1)  They look better.
2)  They're often lighter than steel wheels.
3)  You can often  find a set used  alloys like I did for Stodge for a price that's comparable to buying new steelies.

I don't have a hate-on.  I just don't understand why given the three points above anyone would put them on their car.

1. They look better when they are new, but not when they start to degrade due to salt attacking them.
2.  Sure, but you aren't setting Nurbergring lap times with your snow tires in the middle of winter, so that shouldn't matter much.
3.  See point one.  Most alloys i see that are older than a few years are already starting to show signs of cancer on them.  Painted steelies are cheap ($30) each, and god forbid if i hit a curb, it's only $30 to replace one if i have to, instead of special ordering some custom one-off alloy rim imported from China.

If you are downsizing just check with the dealer.

Or with the Tire Rack or other knowledgeable tire shop.  I know a Corolla owner that the dealer told couldn't downsize the wheels on his car from 16" to 15" when he was asking to buy some 15" steels for his car.  His car has 15" from the factory.

They didn't want to sell me transmission fluid as "you can't change it."
