I recently got a Garmin Nuvi50LM on sale at Canadian Tire for $129 and have found it excellent. Nice big screen, lifetime maps, clear voice commands (and no more "recalculating...recalculating..." it just recalculates and continues on with the directions). At important intersections it gives a nice driver's eye view of the road with very clear lane choice indicated. It provides warnings when over the speed limit and alerted when there was permanent speed cameras.

I'm not an expert on these devices but I can't imagine needing more in a gps unit. I'd really need some convincing to spend more on one.

I agree. Definitely go with a Garmin. I have used them for years and now that they have lifetime maps they are an incredible deal.

I have a Garmin with lifetime maps as well - my only regret is not having gotten one with BlueTooth connectivity to pair it with my BlueAnt S4.

Garmin rules GPS.  Avoid TomTom like the plague

Seriously...get one with lifetime maps and lifetime traffic.  It only cost $50 more than your budget, and will last you a lifetime.  This one here is a very nice unit.  $150.

I spent about that on mine a few years back, and it's worked well enough. No fancy functions like street names, but it did the job. Lately it's gotten less reliable, occasionally producing routes that don't make sense. Not sure what the deal is.

I switched to using Waze on my iPhone. It does all the street name stuff, and it crowd sources traffic conditions, which is pretty clever. And it's free.

I'll repeat what's already been said. Cheap would be a smartphone which you may already have. Otherwise if you look back through previous threads the overwhelming favourite will be Garmin.

I just picked up a new garmin this weekend, $50 off and lifetime maps from Canadian tire. Stay away from tom tom.

I agree, wife has a Tom Tom and I never follow the recommend route. "recalculating" fack off! We have entered the same destination three times the past month and it is always a different route! wtf

OK Garmin it is then but I want it to include Europe not just NA. Where do I find one that has Europe maps?

Garmin have Euro maps but in their cheaper lines you have to buy them.  I *believe* all models have enough memory to store the euro maps as well as the NA maps.

Can't beat Garmin. Better than Tom Tom. There is a Garmin out with lifetime updates.

I used in Nav Free Italy  in June , does not need a data plan to find your location, but needs on to find your route

Definitely a Garmin.  Unfortunately I bought mine before they started offering lifetime map updates.   :(

Garmin for sure, my parents have a Tomtom and I hate the bloody thing, spends more time "recalculating" and is quite unclear at times as to what it wants you to do.
Lighten up Francis.....

When I was first looking for a GPS, I tried both the Garmin and TomTom interfaces to find which one was more intuitive.  For me, it was the Garmin.  I've been using their products since.

I bought a navagon app for my IPhone two years ago. Really good. Always updating maps. Tells you street names, what lane too be in and you can get live traffic oil you want.  Only thing is it uses a lot of battery life.
