My biggest concern about plugin cars is not having a garage. I'd be worried that someone would come along and steal the charging cable. Or does it lock in somehow?

Unfortunately, the 120Vac EVSE supplied with the Volt does not have lock capability at the J1772 connector (some others have) but you can: 1) Activate the alarm (honk) if unplug while charging 2) You can use cable + lock on the EVSE handle if you want to.

The electric charger 3,3Kw (120,208 or 240Vac input) itself is in the car, in the front right fender iirc. The EVSE is just a fancy cable, ground fault detector, contractor and communication module.

Will the Volt "start" or whatever it does to get going with the charge cord attached?

Congrats - very cool.  I've only seen one on the road.  You might be the first on this site with a Volt!

Technically, the Volt can "run" if the start button is depressed once (in the same time having the brake pedal pressed) when plugged BUT in won't move at all. So, you can have (electric compressor) A/C running while you're programming all your 36 preffered preset radio...

Thanks to all for the congrats,

Still about 700 (non-fleet) Volts delivered to Canada yet http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01/chevrolet-volt-sales-figures.html so it still rare to see another one except at my job, just across the street, there is a silver one parked in front of the office.

I posted here  http://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php/topic,79472.msg800390.html#msg800390 earlier today about the  Volt as commuter car

Congrats.    Happy with HydroQuebec?

Well, I budgeted the worst case scenario to be $50/month but it was before we agree to let me plug at work, so it'll be half of that.

I still have to select, buy and get installed by a qualified electrician (some subvention available) a 240Vac EVSE at home: shorter charge time, pre-condition (heat or cool) the battery pack and cabin too ! Do not know yet if I will buy a 208Vac EVSE unit at work cause installation fee may exceed the advantage ...

H-Q. http://www.hydroquebec.com/transportation-electrification/charging-cost.html
2012 is a transition year: They started rolling out R-F "smart meter" but no TOU plan disclosed at that time
Actual rate http://www.hydroquebec.com/residential/tarif-residentiel.html If you use the higher residential  7,5¢/Kw.h + 15% taxes, it still below 9¢/Kw.h for now.

June 2012, without strong A/C use @15-25C, my 36Km one way trip to the office uses about 5Kw.h (half available form the battery), it cost approx. 50¢ if you add the efficiency losses @ 120Vac charge.

Behind the wheel, you have to forget almost all you know about old car: lack of noise & vibration (I mean total silence idling in stop & go traffic, you come more "zen" at work than ever!  ;)), you have to re-learn how to drive, electric regen capture is fun, one pedal control is a possibility/reality. Using the fake "low gear" , it even able to keep its set speed on cruise control driving down a large mountain hill, weird feeling, don't have to touch the brake, recapture otherwise lost kinetic energy.

First week brings some tremendous smiles while a torque driven car pull you from a cold stop. Strange/mixed feeling, econo/expensive sporty but frugal car... I did not change car, I changed of century...
