A friend was cycling on the rail trail when a stick flicked into her spokes, locked up the wheel, sent her over the bars, and smashed her elbow into pieces as she hit the ground. Talk about a painful freak accident.
This didn't cause an accident, but it was freaky, and I remember it like it was yesterday.
18 years ago (I would have been 19-20 y.o.) I was riding down a doublewide trail with a group, on our way to some sweet singletrack. I think we were in Ancaster somewhere. Anyway, I'm riding side-by-side with this other dude, and we're just cruising along at an easy pace, having a conversation about who knows what. He's riding in the left track, and I'm riding in the right track. All of a sudden, a squirrel darts out from the left side of the track, and flies right into this guys front wheel. The squirrel gets caught in the spokes, goes around a few times, and then gets flung out to the right, ahead of my front wheel, and into the forest on the right side of the track. It all happened so quick, we didn't have time to stop or anything. I saw the entire thing. Craziest thing I've ever seen on a bike, and I've seen some pretty effed up
