On the way home last night on a very busy road (Erin Mills Parkway), I heard an accident to my left in the oncoming lane as I was going through an intersection. The sound of cars smashing together (and dragging) was incredibly loud and long, and all I saw was debris flying everywhere. I couldn't stop or slow down safely, so I kept going. In my rear-view mirror I saw cars pulling over, and within five minutes further down the road, there were police cars and a fire truck heading towards the scene. Ironically, this intersection was one just south of Credit Valley Hospital, so I'm sure ambulances were there quickly.
That sound, though. Not sure why it's sticking with me.
I remember stupidly semi-racing someone years ago, me in a Peugeot 1.6L diesel that took 20 sec to 60mph, and her in some other small hatchback. With a car as slow as mine, you had to plan overtakes about 5 minutes in advance. So as we approached a large roundabout, I deliberately towards a the red light, hoping it would turn green whilst I still had some momentum, and she had stopped. Green light! Pedal down, released the 25 or so horses. Took her by surprise and flew past her.
She took umbrage to being overtaken by my sh*tbox, and decided to floor it too. Her car was 10 years newer, more expensive, and faster. We both came off a frosty roundabout, which I was aware of, I had gotten up really early to go and shoot the sunrise, and it was cold out. She was less aware of the road conditions. We exited the roundabout like a pair of ice dancers, she fishtailed left, then right, then left again. Went across both lanes, slammed into the side of the bridge, back over to the other side, bounced off that side too, then came back towards me, hit the curb and flipped onto her roof. After bouncing around a bit more she ended up back on her wheels.
Both me and the traffic coming the other way had already stopped to see if she was alright. She got out of her paintless car and started running towards me swearing. So I left in a hurry and went to shoot the sunrise.
Came back a different route just in case the fuzz was around.
Always sticks with me that one.
