Here's where you jump in an buy a non-depreciating classic to drive while building up the kitty.
This car has been up for sale for a year now, he started out at $18k when I first saw it. Super easy to fix the odometer gear to get that back up & running. The dash is a bit more work to replace, or just get a cover. Seats would need to be recovered, again not a huge pain. The big items with this are the timing belt, water pump & associated rollers, they say to replace the belt every 5yrs regardless of mileage

Mine was inspected last summer & my mechanic said to not bother with changing it yet & it's now 5yrs old. The other thing is oil leaks with this car, usually the front & rear main seals will be leaking by now, not hugely expensive to fix, just annoying (and the Porsche saying is that if there's no oil under it, there's no oil in it!). The big ticket item is the clutch replacement, it's like 20hrs of shop time

Other than that most of it can be done at home on the driveway in a couple of hours, there's a good support community online & parts are still readily available. The car is a blast to drive with it's 50/50 weight balance and is pretty quick for it's age. A couple of little mods & it's as quick as your BMW!
