I've had glasses since I was ten.  I went through some stretches as a teenager and young adult where I wore contacts, but have reverted back to glasses for the past decade, mostly because contacts are a pain.

LASIK is your friend

Not even close to needing that.  As of now, I just need it to read fine print.  But when the time comes, LASIK will be my friend.  My eyes are way too sensitive to ever wear contacts.

I have a really nice set for computers too. Unlike readers, your eyes are much farther when on a computer.

These do the same as readers though. Just crisp things up nicely to make it easier to read.

I've been wearing contacts pretty steady for about 28yrs now, can't stand wearing glasses. I bought readers at Costco, just a light prescription & a 3 pack that I have scattered around the house. For work I don't need them as I'm fine on the computer, its just fine print in low light that gets me.

I keep a magnifying glass in my pocket at work. Hard to see if the 1mm and smaller cutters still have their edge with just my eyes!

At 47 now, I got my first pair of reading glasses today.  I only need them for reading small print, but it certainly seems weird having to wear glasses now.
I have a pair of these multi focus readers; they work well, available at superstore et al.

For me that was when I hit 50.  I found they worked really well.

The only difference was the cost of them.  I had glass lenses and they used what was at the time some fancy new high index glass. This made them as light as plastic.

I'm not there yet, but whenever I get to the point of needing contacts, I'll be going for laser surgery.  My eyes have always been super sensitive so putting at contact lens in my eye just isn't possible.  Weird eh?

My wife was just at the optician.  Her prescription requires a slight change to one of her lenses. While she was there they mentioned they are seeing more and more young adults requiring progressive lenses. They said it was due to the era of the Smart Phone . That doesn't surprise me in the least.

I'd love to do LASIK.  My brother and his wife both did it.  Mind you, they both work for the Feds, and each one of their insurance plans covered 50% of the cost, so each one got it for free.

I'm pretty sure my wife's insurance would cover 50% of the cost (federal plan), however I'm fairly confident that mine doesn't (even though I get $300 every 2 years).  I'm pretty sure that if my insurance ponied up for LASIK, it would be cheaper for them in the long run, as I wouldn't be spending $300 every 2 years.

It is only $500 per eye

Hmmm,

I looked into it a little.  My wife's insurance covers $1000, and mine will cover $300.  I need to wait another year before I'm eligible, but damn, this could happen.  I've been wearing corrective lenses now for 27 years.

I got both eyes done with TLC about 13 years ago now....best money I've ever spent.  Only downside for me has been extra sensitivity to bright light during the daytime, and extra glare at night (oncoming headlights, etc.).  I am a habitual wearer of sunglasses, so daytime is not a problem.  The nighttime glare is more annoying that anything....if it were to get any worse, I could get glasses solely for nighttime driving, but knock on wood the effect has been stable for years.

I do think I'm going to need reading glasses in the next few years, but I would have needed them eventually anyway.
