Found out a few days ago that a colleague had a serious heart attack (the widow-maker) while on vacation last week.  She's in a coma in Kingston, on life support, pending the arrival of her grown kids (from outside the province) at the hospital.  We've been told that the outcome will probably not be positive.

I've never had to deal with the sudden death/loss of a coworker.  I liked her very much, but we weren't friends per se (as in outside the office).  She was such a funny person, and a very dedicated employee who was very good at what she did.  We got along very well.  Walking by her desk, which still has all her belongings for now, has been rather upsetting.   :-\

Has anyone else been through this?

It's happened a few times. We usually have senior consultants who've retired from utilities, and come to work with us for us as specialists. One rather gruff fellow was from the Miramichi in NB, and knew some of my extended family. Once he found out, we got along very well. He had a heart attack while he was back in NB and never returned.

Another pretty young guy had cancer, went on sick leave. He came back to visit a couple of times, and he had lost a pile of weight, and really didn't look well. He never made it. Very nice fellow, very sharp engineer. It was a huge shock.

In both cases, they weren't close friends by any stretch, but you still feel a loss.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Yeah, that feeling of loss is really hard to manage, especially when I see her empty desk every time I stand up.  We haven't heard anything about her passing yet -- I suppose that's a good thing.  Maybe.

It was kind of the same after layoffs. After people had left with their personal effects, it was usually the supervisor that would go through what was left to see if there was anything that should be filed or stored or thrown out. I found it bad enough.

Knowing that the person had passed away would have made it much, much worse.

Yeah.  Not sure what I dread more:  seeing her belongings every day, or potentially seeing her desk completely cleared one morning, like she never existed.   :(  I'd hate to be the person replacing her, too.

I think too much.

Received an odd email earlier today about a detailing job from someone out of the Province that is apparently moving here.  Their email was odd and didn't add up so I figured I would entertain them.  Just received this response.   :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:    Facking scammers!

Hello,

That really sounds good to me.....I have all information now and have forwarded that to the mover, The car will be moved to your workshop on July 3rd by 9.00am from the move agent garage, I will soon email you my credit card details for payment & I am happy to proceed right away to confirm bookings.

Before we proceed,  I will need a little favor from you cos i have not paid the moving agent that will deliver my car, I will send to you my credit card details now via email to process through for an amount of $2950 plus your service fee to confirm booking and please help send the $2950 to the moving agent as they receive payment upfront service, so they can have my car move down here for work to be done. I so much wish to pay you and the move agent directly but I am at the hospital right now undergoing long medical sessions and will soon undergo series of surgeries for my hearing disabilities and i need the car immediately i am through with the surgery. The move agent does not have credit card facilities for payment that is why i want you to assist me with this and you can charge all expenses on my credit card while i give it to you now, I would be grateful if I can have this little favor from you.

I hope you well understand me by putting my condition into considerations and I am sorry if however it causes you any inconvenience or it seems unusual besides I don't mind any extra charges it might cost me.

I simply need you to assist me with their payment due to the condition beyond my reasonable control and It wont be convenient for me to pay via other methods. If you will agree to carry on, I will email you my credit card details right away.

I await your urgent response

With Gratitude

I know who you're talking about in the second case.  It was relatively early in my career, and the guy and I shared a large U-shaped desk.  It was a busy time and neither of us had families so it was the norm for us to put in 60-hour weeks.  We weren't friends outside of work, but did play in a rec soccer league together.  He was a very nice guy.

One Friday afternoon, he was heading out at lunch time and said he had a doctor's appointment, but would be back by 2:30 in case anyone was looking for him.  Around 2 I got a text from him saying it was taking longer than expected so he might not be back before the end of the day.  I said no worries and I'd let the team know.  Didn't think anything of it.  On Monday morning, my boss pulled me into his office to let me know the guy had been diagnosed with late stage colon cancer and that he didn't have much time.  They were talking weeks, not months.  He had no family here.  All of his family was in Libya.  He couldn't make the long trip home, so he had to have surgery just so it would keep him alive until his brother got to Canada.  I don't think he got to see the others in his family again.  It hit home because we were around the same age back then.

Hope he's enjoying watching the World Cup wherever he is!

As the days go by and the baby's due date gets closer, things at work seem more and more trivial.  Hard to focus.

^^^I'm going to make a game of identifying where all the pictures you post were taken.

This one is obviously Cabela's next to Ikea.  Behind those condos just to the right of the store is Bison Butte, the newly opened Bike Park that was built for the Canada Games last year.

Does it make me an arse if I see the local NASCAR couple (could be him, could be here...both have feet made of lead) and I know I'll be at the stop sign before them...and then because there's traffic coming...I don't go anymore than 100 (posted speed) for the next mile and a bit and only 70 (in a 70 zone) until she has to turn off?  And because I'm in the Sonic for the summer...well, darn it! It's super slow to get to speed too! (teehee...it's not...but, teehee) I get a wee bit of joy doing it when I can...  Had RCMP in front of me but he's an undercover unit so I doubt he'd have stopped her.  They could make a killing off them - or at their (assumed on my part) speed, I think it's an attempted murder or suicide or something crazy.

My co-worker lives in the same wee little village they do, and I saw her blast past him and another car with less than a mile to go to the turn, he doesn't get what their rush is, he (because of me, you're welcome) got to the corner in town not 20' behind her.  Last week I tried staying ahead of them for fun, I had to do 140-150 to keep them behind me (so I could get to the stop sign first!  ;D)  My brother says she complains at work about how bad their car is on gas...well duh!

I was a bit surprised by the lack of motorcycles on the road yesterday. Perfect riding conditions, I might have seen 4-5 bikes out.

I think the jacked up insurance rates and rough time in the oil patch are having an effect.

The difference between a 400cc and a 500cc bike here amounts to $600/year with the maximum clean driving discount applied.
