Looking at getting a third key for the Focus, as I'm simply not comfortable only having two, when both are out and about in circulation on a daily basis.
Dealer quoted $300 - I trust them to not fleece me, but they just don't have the equipment so they send for it to be done by Ford itself and thus it costs a lot.

I went to a local Locksmith - He quotes $110 for just a key without buttons, or $160 for a key with buttons. He claims it's OEM.

They're also willing to cut any key I bring them for $35... since it's a stupid laser cut system it costs quite a bit.

Now to decide whether to pay the extra ~$60 to know that the locksmith is on the hook if the transponder doesn't work, or to buy from ebay.

I may go the local route since 1) they're a very good local company and 2) the owner is known to us. On the other hand, I really hate the key design, and I could try a unknown flip key design.

$160 for a key with buttons isn't that bad.

Canadian tire now sells chip keys without the transponder.  It was just over $100 after taxes for the key, cutting and programming.

I always think this is a solution to a problem that the manufacturers invented.

I went ahead and ordered it, they're a good local shop (well they have a store in Halifax too), and the key is the OEM key.
I did debate going for the non-transponder key, but at $50 I might as well get the full deal. Of course now I can't get this key wet either, but I hate beaches anyways :P

For any car with 2+ regular drivers 3 keys is a must IMO. I was surprised Ford didn't have a valet key or anything.

Applied for NEXUS on Sunday. Conditionally approved yesterday. Booked appointment for this morning. Went forward without a hitch, though the fingerprinting system was slow. Approved. Card should ship soon.

The Border guards were incredibly surprised I was able to get it done so quickly.

Why are 3 keys a must?  Lose your keys often?  I've never lost a car key
