The Staggering Ecological Impacts of Computation and the Cloud
https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/the-staggering-ecological-impacts-of-computation-and-the-cloud/

I'll have to take some time and read that carefully, indeed an interesting premise. I work daily in the cloud and I wonder about the net carbon damage.

There are web search engines like ecosia that use their revenue to plant trees https://www.ecosia.org

I do wonder though if eventually having cloud computing will improve the net carbon footprint, because outsourcing computation to a service that incentivizes off-peak use (when hydroelectric etc has excess power) would encourage some improved practices. Furthermore, Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) bare the cost of electricity and will be more likely to choose efficient chipsets (most recent processor improvements have yielded dramatically lower electricity consumption).

Not to mention as an end-user you get billed for each unit of compute/networking/etc so it makes you far more aware when developing your software - that being said, compute is cheaper than your time so sometimes you just end up throwing more money at the problem.

These days it's also much cheaper/effective to rent space on a computer than buying a server say for example for home use, so there may be a net reduction in carbon emissions if people do more of their computing workloads in the cloud.

As a customer, you could also make the choice to host your servers in Quebec (Hydro Electricity) instead of say NB (if we had data centres  ;D)  which uses some coal.

That being said, not all uses of computing is efficient or arguably necessary; bitcoin mining for example is a huge waste of resources.

I booked a range session and gun rental for my wife's birthday in April.

https://xtremegunshootingcenter.com

She's mentioned to me that she'd like to start shooting, and I figured something like this is a good introduction.  So the two of us are booked into Thermea for the morning/lunch (we were supposed to go on MY birthday, but rescheduled due to COVID), then we'll head to the range mid-afternoon and shoot some guns.

It's expensive ($99/person for 50 rounds of .22), but they're also the ONLY game in town, so you gotta take what you can get.  Prices go up as caliber goes up.

That's always fun, especially if you try a few you've never shot before. I grew up with rifles, but pistols and AK's were not something we had kicking around on the farm

Wife has, apparently in Soviet Russia that was a high school thing. Take it apart, put it back together, shoot targets. I asked if the targets were shaped like Western devils but she won't tell me

Midnight last night and it sounds like somebody is murdering kittens outside out window.  Thankfully that wasn't happening and it was only a fox. How can something so cute sound crazy creepy.

Sounded like the first one.

Cops were busy in Moncton yesterday

Sadly this is getting to be all too common here now.  10 years ago, if you asked me if there were any neighbourhoods to avoid in Moncton, I'd say no.  Some are more desirable than others, but none were actually dangerous.  That's not the case anymore.

Nothing like giving yourself an expensive birthday present. Wonder if it was their parent's car?

Friend of mine just picked up an interesting car: 2011 BMW 535i Gran Turismo xDrive. Interesting thing about these cars is that despite the 5-series name they're effectively a 7-series hatchback. $11k, 200k on it, includes a three year warranty and has been serviced by our local Euro mechanic for the last six years. Looking forward to checking it out and taking it for a spin.

I'm curious if anything has changed since this article was published. If not, further proof that insurance companies are pure scum.
