Sounds almost romantic, these trains running all over Canada back then.    I had very few train trips until the '60s  and by then it was 3rd rail electrified British Rail, totally ugly and totally boring. I just commuted to London for a couple of years and have stayed well away from trains ever since.    Thinking about I have taken one oneway  trip to London and one cheap day return to London in 2003...the only times have been on a train since maybe 1969.

Why would you want to go to Thunder Bay?

 ;D

To see Sleeping Giant!

I had to look it up. Never heard of it.

Good point. Something to do next summer, maybe.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Random observations...

I can't say I've seen one New Dodge RAM truck in this neck of the woods.  I'll have to keep my eyes open.  No local Dodge dealer, and the closest one (about 35-40 minutes away) has a rep of being a bunch of a-holes.

Speaking of RAMs...broker/friend has a RAM.  Big Dodge guy. "You drive a Ford! Pfft!" (yeah, but at least mine won't break dropping a boat off)  Always bug him about the towing mirrors (his truck doesn't have them), so last weekend he remembered (because I had just bugged him on Friday) to observe...and sure enough.  Calls me Monday AM for work related stuff...oh, BTW, was in Steinbach on the weekend...and you're right!! Every 2500 RAM - towing mirrors engaged.  No trailers.  He felt embarrassed by the stupidity.  I laughed.  Sent him the Black Dodge RAM video...

Wow...after a month of not seeing the sun...it sure has moved far south!  Not in my mirrors anymore blinding me on the way to work in the AM.  On the bright side (guffaw), it's only 6 and a bit more weeks and the days start getting longer again!!  ;D

At $1000 every two weeks, that's only 3.8 years to be able to pay CASH for a new Porsche.

That ain't bad.

Just in changing some settings on my router and noticed that I have 33 devices currently connected to it via WiFi.    :o  Crazy, I guess I really never realized how many wireless devices are in the house.

This car has been up for sale for a year now, he started out at $18k when I first saw it. Super easy to fix the odometer gear to get that back up & running. The dash is a bit more work to replace, or just get a cover. Seats would need to be recovered, again not a huge pain. The big items with this are the timing belt, water pump & associated rollers, they say to replace the belt every 5yrs regardless of mileage  :banghead:  Mine was inspected last summer & my mechanic said to not bother with changing it yet & it's now 5yrs old. The other thing is oil leaks with this car, usually the front & rear main seals will be leaking by now, not hugely expensive to fix, just annoying (and the Porsche saying is that if there's no oil under it, there's no oil in it!). The big ticket item is the clutch replacement, it's like 20hrs of shop time  :banghead:  Other than that most of it can be done at home on the driveway in a couple of hours, there's a good support community online & parts are still readily available. The car is a blast to drive with it's 50/50 weight balance and is pretty quick for it's age. A couple of little mods & it's as quick as your BMW!

^^I have a soft spot for the 951...it was a rocket back in the day and as you point out, still competitive today.

One of the things I'll need to sort out in my head is do I want a projectish Porsche, or something more daily driverish. Project = time, which I don't have much of...though I would love to make the time to tinker, and buying such car would perhaps force the issue for me.

I know a good Porsche mechanic down your way that would probably be able to do a lot of the work for you at a reasonable rate... the stuff you don't feel like tackling. I'd find out from the seller when the timing belt was last done (with receipt), clutch, and any other repairs. It's a great colour for that car & 86's have a different wheel offset that gives them a nicer stance and deeper dish on the rear wheels. Plus it should have the limited slip diff as well as transmission cooler as those were all standard on the 1986 & became optional in 1987.

You need to stop shopping for other people, and focusing on picking up your new vehicle early, so that you can create the Show N Shine and satisfy our collective curiosity, damn it!!!!

A long time ago someone posted a link where you could compare different cars and their EPA's and you could enter your drive on a map - and I lost that link.  Anyone remember what it was?  Still have it?

My son loved Elton John so much (wife and kids went to concert in Wpg) he bought tickets to one of his last shows in London (England) for next November.  Has enough points on his credit card to get there and back for "free".

Yesterday he sees they've added shows in Fargo and Minneapolis next June... :P

Oh well, you can still go to London, that'd be cool on its own, too.
