All the BS about the MAX right now is mostly all ridiculous knee jerk reaction.

Not really.  When planes crash and they don't immediately know why, it's a prudent thing to do.

It's not the first time this has been done.

Yeah, this isn't knee jerk at all. The earlier 737 models were the Corolla of the aircraft world, reliable and everywhere, logging 10's of millions of trouble free miles. This Max was released in late 17, if memory serves me, and has had 2 serious incidents. I would be very wary of flying on one.

You work in aircraft repair or something, don't you??

 I do.

Absolutely zero, paperwork filled out incorrectly can ground a fleet, this is way beyond that. Its a pity as the 737 was a solid platform.

I see that the UK has grounded all 737 MAX flights into UK airspace, so the flight tonight from Halifax is now a A321 to Montreal and then a 787 Dreamliner across the pond.

Haven't read what/if anything WestJet is doing with their Halifax to Paris flight.

All the BS about the MAX right now is mostly all ridiculous knee jerk reaction. Still, happy my flight back to YYZ tomorrow is a 737-800

Failure rate of 2 out of 350 is nothing to worry about, you say?

Heading to Andorra today.  Cold today.  High of 14C in Barcelona, 1.5 hours to Andorra, high of 3C!  I will feel right at home for the day.  Good shopping though!

Structural failures of 3 de Havilland Series 1 Comets were enough to have them pulled from service. Just saying.

Looks like Canada and the US are the only two places in the world where they are still operating.  :-\

I see where it's come out that a couple of other pilots have reported control issues that involved the nose down thing shortly after take off. In those cases they were successful in overriding the automated safety systems and regained manual control.

Apparently its a problem with the stall prevention programming. Its easy enough to over come but still the pilot shouldn't be having to screw around with rogue computers when they are on take off.

Exactly, and those had a very obvious structural problem, square windows leading to cracks from the corners which then lead to explosive decompression...this issue, Boeing is "working on it".

Obvious NOW, but not obvious back then.  Unless your name is Nevil Shute.  LOL

.....and they are grounded.  Not sure what the "new information" is or if that was just a face saving comment about why it wasn't done earlier

With the :censor: that Boeing pulled against Bombardier and the C-Series (now the Airbus A220), I feel like this is karma coming to bite them in the ass.

The 737 Max aircraft use large diameter engines that would have reduced clearance to the ground. To maintain clearance, the engines are mounted further to the front and above the wing level. This changes dynamics of the plane and the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System was programmed to provide a consistent feel to previous generations of the 737.

Hmmm,

So from the sounds of it, the plane doesn't want to fly straight and level (like I presume the old 737 did), but rather, naturally wants to nose up until it stalls, so software was installed that would help keep the plane level.

yeah, I could see how this would be a bad thing, especially if the software failed.
