We use  litres/100km as that is the SI unit for fuel consumption.
Wonder why the U.S. don't use gallons/100 miles ?
Who care  ::)

I did the Brighton to Cobourg run in the truck today, keep it to the speed limited, it is 40 km
3000kg truck with a ladder on the roof, 5.5 l, 4*4
Rating was 11.8 l/ 100km
had to go into Belleville today, took #2 home, reset the mileage at Brighton
Rating when I got back to Cobourg was 3.3 l/100km in Gen 3 Pruis

Yup, here it is.  It is an average over the whole run and different journalists drove different cars so it can't really be used as a direct head-to-head comparison

USA 2013 Escape EPA #
Horsepower, Torque & EPA-Estimated Fuel Economy
2.5L Duratec I-4 Engine Horsepower: 168 @ 6,000 rpm Torque (lb.-ft.): 170 @ 4,500 rpm
      6-speed SelectShift Automatic
            FWD 22 city/31 hwy/25 combined mpg
1.6L EcoBoost I-4 Engine Horsepower: 178 @ 5,700 rpm3  Torque: 184 @ 2,500 rpm3
      6-speed SelectShift Automatic
            FWD 23 city/33 hwy/26 combined mpg
4WD 22 city/30 hwy/25 combined mpg You wrote you seen mediocre # 7.9l/100km which =Imperial 36MPG (US gals 30MPG). Why do you feel this is mediocre for a AWD 178hp CUV vehicle? I assume your 7.9L was overall average yes/no?
What AWD CUV in this class with same HP exceeds your findings compared with the 2013 Escape? Or maybe the better question would
be , what type of fuel efficiency numbers would you consider not to be mediocre in the class with same 178hp & AWD?
2.0L EcoBoost I-4 Engine Horsepower: 240 @ 5,500 rpm3  Torque: 270 @ 3,000 rpm3
      6-speed SelectShift Automatic
            FWD 22 city/30 hwy/25 combined mpg
            4WD 21 city/28 hwy/24 combined mpg

Well, the 7.9 wasn't an average but the absolute best I could squeak out of it while near hypermiling (at or under the speed limit, slow acceleration form stops, coasting as much as possible, etc).  The CX-5, although fwd, did 5.6 on the same run.  AWD is not going to make a 2.3 L/100 km difference.

When we had the CX-5 for review we averaged in the 8's during normal driving styles.  I hope to test the Escape soon.  Yes, the Escape 1.6 L has more power than the CX-5, but it also has a lot more weight.  I would think they will be close in a drag race.
