Have you done the one on the TT yet?

Oh you'll love this!!

There is no PCV valve per se in the VR6. It uses a CCV.  If it fails or needs replacing, you have to.......replace the valve cover.  :rofl2:  The CCV comes with the "kit" from Audi.

$450 USD.  If you get the kit with the breather hose, it's $540.

Yep!!

More fabulous, intelligent engineering!!    :rofl2:

Might as well change the PCV valve while plugs are done.  Typically 5 minutes and a $5 part.
maybe i'll give them a call in the morning and check that...no idea what that parts costs for my Kia.

^^Would be surprised if it's more than $10.

I haven't the slightest WHERE it is though.  Should be jutting out from the valve cover though.  At worst, he might have to remove the engine beauty cover (which he might have off already for the plugs)

Good call on PCV. The one in my Mazda5 got clogged and left us stranded.  It was a $30 part and the ordeal cost me about $1400.

In the Mazda5 the intake manifold had to come off. It's not the Germans...

I can deal with removing an intake.

I can't deal with replacing the valve cover.

The newer skyactiv motors are similar. A pain in the ass. They now make a catch can that can be installed in it's place to help  keep crap from forming on the intake valves. http://www.jamesbaroneracing.com/blog/theres-nothing-positive-about-the-2-0l-skyactiv-pcv-system/

got something clarified...the rear wheel bearings are fine, however, they have to come out when you replace the back plate...the dealer said that usually means you need to replace them when they are removed as they are likely no good once the are removed...i mentioned this to the indie and he said he'll update my shortly on it.

That was the case when I had to replace the brake backings on my Highlander.  But it was 12 years old at the time.

Sounds like a lot of bother to replace that backing plate then.

The one on the left rear of my GTI had rusted and was making noise, so I just cut it off. Been without it for a couple years now and haven’t noticed any ill effects. What do they do, anyway? Keep road spray away from the brakes, I guess?

If/when I have to pull apart that brake/hub again, I’ll think about replacing the backing plate while I’m at it, but it doesn’t seem like something I’d need to do just because.

I had just bought the HL and needed it for a safety. Otherwise I would have ignored it.

One of mine also rusted away on the GTI so I just cut it off and moved on. Did love the noise when it started slipping though as I thought something serious just broke.

I wouldn't bother replacing it on a Rio either but that is me.

Just to add....for DI engines.......a very low NOACK oil number is preferable.  The low NOACK number helps prevents carbon deposits and build up.

car is basically done and ready to go now...i asked them if it was a good idea to change the oil since it just got that cleaning service, and he said it wouldn't be a bad idea...i asked about the NOACK oil and he said he can use that...i'm not sure if he actually has that oil, or perhaps just "better" oil than the cheapest stuff on the market...in any case, he's changing the oil then coming to pick me up.

regarding the back plates, he said the brakes themselves are fine, and the back plates really don't do much...he said just leave it and don't bother with them...maybe at some point if there's a reason to remove the rear wheel bearings, perhaps look at it then, but he said they don't really do much so he wouldn't bother ever replacing them.

not sure what the final bill is (forgot to ask), but it will still be cheaper than the dealer was quoting me.

ok, got the car back...runs like a new car.

going by what he told me here:

he said there was quite a bit of carbon build up, all cleaned up now...based on Ron's advice, i got the oil changed (synthetic oil and quality filters)...the back plate is not worth doing, just ignore it...brakes are all good otherwise...new plugs installed...new flex pipe installed...total price $548 taxes in.

in comparison, the dealership quoted me $483 plus tax (546 tax in) for just the carbon cleaning plug change)...they also quoted me around the same price for the flex pipe replacement...so i got everything done at the indie for half what the dealer charged...as well, the dealer told me i'd need new wheel bearings (no idea how much they charge for those) when replacing the back plates (which everyone agrees isn't worth bothering with)...and they also quoted me $1443 for a front/rear brake job...even just a front/rear brake service, they quoted me $238 plus tax (dealer said they were fine, don't need it)...lastly, dealer said if the carbon cleaning and plug change didn't fix all issues (rough idle, stalling, CEL code, etc), then i'd need to get the intake removed, cleaned and injectors replaced...from what i can tell, the car is perfect now.

would i still recommend a Kia vehicle??...sure, just get an indie to do the service on it.

it's going to be a rare occurrence for me to ever return to the dealer (unless i'm getting something out of it).
