That was in 2004, pre-trip computers in common cars.

Really?  My 1987 Audi had a trip computer, as did my 1990 Ford/Mazda, my other 3 1990 Audi's, etc.  Oddly, our top of the line 2003 Subaru doesn't have one.

My 1990 Eagle Premier  ES had a trip computer. One of the few things on it that was reliable.

9.8 --  avg L/100km

Are you referring to my sig? I have a 3,450 lb Mazda 5 (six seater minivan type thing) with the old 2.3L engine. :)

On the road now... Actually not right now as I'm eating now but you know what I mean.  Looks like the true number is going to be much closer to 8.0!

Okay so doing some extrapolation it looks like I actually averaged more like 7.8L/100km for the week.

I averaged 4.9L/100km on my fill up today!!  Impressive!

7.8 is very good, 4.9 is exceptional. You should be shouting that from the rooftops.

If that 4.9 is from a short trip (wing mentioned 100km fill-up), be careful.  A similar "shorty" highway trip netted me a 4.7 with the Sentra at the speed limit on the quite flat 417.  On a short distance, the top-off difference has more effect on the outcome.  7.8 is entirely feasible.

We drove minivans on that comparo (see the June 2004 issue).  The Odyssey doesn't have one, and that I'm sure as I own a 2003.  I'm pretty sure the Sienna, Grand Caravan and Freestar did not have one either.  The fully gizmoed Quest SE probably had one, but if it did, the numbers weren't used.

I don't count Audis as "common cars"  ;) ... my 2001.5 B5.5 Passat had a trip computer too.

Those results seem consistent with the CR results I referred to above. They have the 3 at the top of the segment in overall mileage with the Corolla. Not bad considering the 3 has a larger, more powerful engine.

Looking forward to even better results for the 3 when they incorporate the 3-2-1 exhaust system into the version.
This will apparently allow for even higher compression in the gass engine and better mileage.

Cars like this make me wish I had more than one parking spot chez moi.

exactly...i filled up my ET a few weeks ago, reset the gauge and drove home...i was fortunate that i didn't hit any red lights and managed to "coast" all the way home in 5th gear going about 60 km/hr...when i pulled into the garage, my reading was about 3.8L/100kms...while i technically achieved that rating (in the city, BTW), i wouldn't use it as a gauge...had it been a more normal amount of traffic (creating stop and go conditions) along with hitting a few traffic lights, it would have likely been more in the 7 range...with the colder temps we had last week, my current tank is at 8L/100kms, which is still about 15% better than the rated numbers...nothing special done here, just regular driving.

My 130km trip was pretty typical.  I filled up drove to work and back then around town a bit for supper, went to wal-mart then Harveys then headed to canadian tire. Then we headed out to the gas station to fill up.

So it was pretty impressive.

No, sorry, was actually referring to the Mazda 3 SkyActiv reviewed...that is what was reported as mileage.  The 9.5L is more than acceptable for your Mazda 5 but definitely not the new 2.0L...

So hold on a second here... You went out around town a bit for supper, then went to wal-mart and then to Harvey's?! Dude, you might want to get that hole in your stomach checked out! :)

My other Honda is an MP4-31!

The leadfoots at insideline.com are getting 31 MPG (US) in their first month with their long-term Mazda 3 SkyActive (automatic).  That's 3 MPG better than their 1.4T Sonic (6MT, 28 MPG), but not as good as their TDI Jetta (35 mpg).

If they can maintain 30+ MPG, I'll be impressed.  They only get ~ 32 MPG with their year-long Mazda2.

Maybe this SkyActive powertrain is the real deal?
