Better but still incorrect. This is not grade 4 class, don't act like it is.

I'm not sure how to take these used car reviews, they more often than not lambaste Euro cars for their stereotypical issues, or are they stereotypical? My Honda is a stereotypically reliable car by perception, gets excellent long term reliability, but somehow has not held up as well and has cost more overall to keep going than my Volvo has, stereotypically a car with spotty reliability confirmed with lookup's on both CR and Edmunds.

A gently used A4 Avant is high on our list as a replacement, so this is all good food for thought on the brand in general.

The reliability surveys don't guarantee you'll have issues or a reliable car. They just give you an indication of the likelihood of having issues.

Scaerio had a 1993 850 GLT that torched it's wiring harness for instance. These cars were known for having electrical issues.

Totally agreed, although I figure once you're 7 years or 200,000 km's anything can go wrong.

Do you have young children? If so pass.

Yep the joys of later-in-life parenthood but the "pass"??? Bam bam will be 2 in March. We'll get his take on the cars at the CIAS in a couple of weeks. Moreover, lady leadfoot will have the "bigger" car this time around. Her choice but ultimately my headache if it turns out to be turkey. We both have a disdain for SUV's/CUV's but anything is possible.

I went through a wagon phase (Passat, Volvo V70R). Now the wife drives a LR3. I shouldn't have said pass on the A4. The previous generation was tiny. Kid seats would not fit. The stretched newer version should be better.

2012 TSX Wagon

Didn't know those were coming to Canada(again). No AWD but it will have a decent price tag and no worries on reliability there. Nice looking vehicle on paper as well.

Come to think of it we haven't looked at that aspect of the A4, but it can't be worse than the S60. Front seat passengers are practically kissing the windshield beacuse the seat has to be so far forward to accomodate the damned thing. It won't for much longer, Bam Bam will easily hit the 40 pound/40 inch mark by spring and move into a far less bulky booster seat.

It's obvious you haven't sat in one of those interiors. Christ man, get it together.

I sat in one at the last car show that came into town....then I went to Audi, thats what an interior on a car at that price is supposed to look like. What, a guy cant have an opinion that the interior on a car is cheap???
Lighten up Francis.....

Considering that a CTS-V is about the same amount of money as a loaded A6 premium  with the 3.0 supercharged ( not even in the same league) I guess comes down to your prioroties. I will take the extra 200 HP and the "cheap" interior. Then again no-one makes big fast sedans like the Germans...

To me its the same thing as the Corvette, great car, world beater performance, it looks decent and it handles like its on rails.....then you get inside. Im sorry, if Im dropping over $60K on a car, I expect an interior to match.

Except to get that kind of performance in a compareable sized German car you are well north of $100k.

I would take the A6.  Fast enough, the right size, looks good to me, great interior.

used to own many German and Japanese for me and my family, most German we owned were well know for terrible maintenance.  But for me, it is not so bad.  Parts are cheaper for German car (in Hong Kong, and the labor to fix it was cheap and most the local garage have the equipment computer and tools for specific make)
Common problem I experienced
M.Benz W140 S500, S600, engine wiring, soft close air pump, a/c, ECU, ABS sensor, that's it, other is just wear item like suspension bushing, engine mount.  S600 rebuild the transmission twice(every 2 years) for the friction disc.  I don't blame the car since my young brother like to burn out with this car whenever he got a chance.
W215 CL500,  the common air suspension leak.
BMW E39 540i, E38 740i  E39 is almost problem free, the electric shocks lasted 8 years(80,000km) before I swap to Sachs sport kit.  E38 have all the problem, light module, ABS, A/C...
Now, I own a 2002 VW Passat with almost 300k km mileage.  It still drive like new with proper maintenance.

Japanese I owned do suffer some problem.  My 2000 Aristo Vertex have transmission problem.  Idle problems, power steering problem. And the garage said they can't rebuild they can only replace with used(new are expensive) and most parts are more expensive compare to the German I own.
ex idle valve on a 2000 BMW 540i (HK$700/CAD $80) VS Throttle body Assembly for a 2000 Toyota WINDOM (Lexus ES300)(HK$5400/CAD $750)

Now I moved from Hong Kong to Canada.  And I find out that Euro spec car is different than the N/A spec car.  Like BMW E39, Euro spec car don't have emission air pump, EGR... and it is more reliable than the car here.

I log 150-200km daily for visiting customers and I drove in both Hong Kong and China.  I think it is better to run the car (hard)daily then store it.
I drive all my car hard, but I also keep up with maintenance.

ok it's the same old.
If somebody want's to drive a high end German sedan, should be aware of maintenance.
If you want to drive a stove , go ahead, no excitement, not so trilling, but reliable.
look in every rich neighborhood, you'll find at least one high end German sedan.Don't tell me that those people are stupid. They like what they drive and they can afford the bills for maintaining.
If the car is 50 grand , and you have only 50 grand, then don't buy it.
Also everyone here jumped on German car reliability have in mind only high end models that are on sell here.Don't   forget German and other EU car companies are making way more other models that are very efficient and reliable.
They advanced diesel technology far behind anybody else did.Taxis in EU are going over million kms if you think that Europeans don't drive, also normal commute in Germany is around 100 km, and yes the highway are much better.
I do prefer European car as a car, but when it comes to let's say trucks, then Americans are making them the best.
Just thing of preference.
Before I bought the A3 I did test drive 2005 A6.
Very nice car, smooth,  enough power,  handling was very, very nice.
But it was the car for the boss(the wife), and we end up with the A3 which is also trill to drive because is very fast(2.0 TSFI)quatro s line .No problems so far, oh yes one burn signal bulb.
51 000 km.
