On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Thought it was too obvious.  Zappa is more obscure, at least now...

There's something to be said for living close to work. I just love hopping on that longboard first thing.

I feel the exact opposite.  As a lover of cars and driving cars, it would suck to live so close to work.  I enjoy my 30-40 minute commute before and after work immensely.

No way.  I love driving but I'd take a bike or longboard any day over a car.

I'm with RR here, a commute helped to clear the brain before or after work...most of the time anyway when there was not a snowstorm or a crash blocking everything.

I Agree, 30-50 minutes is a good amount of time for me. Also give a chance for the car to get to proper operating temps etc.

I'm the opposite as I absolutely despised commuting to work.  I'll take my commute down a flight of stairs to my home office any day!!  And whenever I want to take off for a leisurely cruise with the top down I do so.

I'm thinking the 30-50 minutes commutes don't bother me like most because when I lived up north and in Sudbury these were typical the times I experienced driving to mine sites.

I am pretty sure I'd love living close to work - in theory that is. But working in mid-town Toronto that's not going to happen. Just based on lifestyle (and cars) I need to have a detached home with a decent garage, and I'd have to win the lottery before I could have that in the city.
So I currently commute about 50km (one way) from North/West Mississauga....Usually 2.5-3 hours per day in the car. And currently looking to move out further to Innisfil (about 75km 1 way).....For all the usual reasons (more house, more space, etc). It's really rediculous when you think about it though. Real estate prices are pushing people further and further out of the city....I am not sure where this stops either.

All immaterial now I'm retired but I'd rather have the smaller house in the city and one car...which we did. I then commuted against the traffic...which was great at first ( late '70s) but by 2006 was not a lot better that the other way. FWIW mrs tpl either was commuting outbound as I was but not as far or for a period was working near King & Bay which was a 20 minute walk.

I'll commute up to 1hr each way on bike and prefer it to sitting in a car. I can get all my exercise just by going to/from work.

Maybe I'm different but I'd rather have a smaller house and less land so that I could have more time NOT sitting in traffic. How can people not calculate drive time and health into their formula?

People will drive 2-4 hours a day in their cars but this takes away anytime they can be spending with their family/kids or out doing more fun things.

Plus how much money are they really saving by spending more money to commute further? It has to cost at least $300-500/month + extra wear and tear to drive 50-75kms each way every day.

All very true. I guess it really depends on where your priorities are. I just don't see myself enjoying life as much in the city. I prefer the small town feel, big yards, no crowds/lineups, and most of all the space to enjoy my passion (cars). We've never been the type to spend much time out at restaurants, bars, etc.....Perfect idea of a Friday night is sitting in my garage with the wifey, drinkin a couple beers, listening to some country music and doing some light work on one of the cars.

Well i have been driving 126km  a day for the last 23yrs and nice 40-45min. drive is nice.I go from Bayview/401 to Keswick each day but my hrs of work are from 6:30-3PM. So i am in and out BEFORE the traffic gets that bad,can be a real "B" some days but most are pretty good. Get yourself a Civic (mine has 420,000km) and still running like a clock.

Youve just described our Friday or Saturday nights....when we have friends over one of the cars gets backed out and we usually have a lot of our neighbors over as well coming over. Couldnt imagine living in some cramped, old house, with no lot, no garage and have nowhere for our friends to park. Right now my commute is about 1/2 an hour, but a lot of it is open country roads, I love it.
Lighten up Francis.....

i didn't read through all 3 pages so forgive me if i'm repeating anything.

2008 Ford Ranger V6 4.0L

using CAA's car cost calculator... (which, like anything else, isn't 100%)

but here's some information i've come up with.
round trip communite = 65km
65km x 5 days = 325km
325km x 52 weeks (sure this doesn't count vacation time).
that's 16,900km (potentially, only commuting to work)

now assuming the Ranger isn't a 4x4 - consumption is subjective but you can ball park annual fuel cost with these numbers to be about $2,585
now if you do have the 4x4, increase in consumption equal to $2,936
these numbers are only using 16,900kms with the price of gas at $1.25 and factoring average fuel economy ratings for this vehicle.

Big time. The entire industry needs a purge of projects with overly optimistic economics and unskilled people IMO. Financing has stopped completely and only robust properties with a 20% ROI will get consideration.
