Any possibility of the boss letting you telecommute a few days out of the week?

Nope no chance on the telecommute.
I was talking to someone today at work that happens to drive about 95km (one way) to work and she was telling me that its a pain in a*s and she has been doing it for 2yr. She was driving a 2006 Mazda 3 with about 130,000km. She only missed 3days of work last year due to the roads. Now where she is, houses are less pricey but 95km one way takes her about 1hr15min.

Well, if you currently drive about 28Km and  your new commute will be 60, you're basically doubling your distance so you can comfortably estimate that tires will last half as long, gas will go twice as fast and repairs...well, those get tricky. I know I drive a long ways for work and it becomes very expensive over time, and that is with an economical 4-cylinder compact, I couldn't put bread on the table if I had a Ranger. If you LOVE your truck, there isn't much to do - keep 'er going and make the drive. If you can live with a smaller car, get a used Honda Civic and pocket the $200-300/month you'll save in gas and maintenance compared to the truck. Better yet, save up that $300/month and in a few years go and buy yourself a brand-new Ranger!  ;D

Sorry I don't get it  ???

I guess that is not so bad, 40min to 45min dive, and civic's seem to be able to load up the KM on them.  The one point that people seem to forget is the $pay$.  Does what you make a work justify the amount of driving you do? making $20 an hour and driving in 60km (one way) to work (again what you drive madders too) is it worth it? what is the cut off of pay vs. commuting? some to think about. Working in TO and living in Hamilton, well cost of living is lower but your commuting dips into that as well.

Good point. I think that depends on your priorities, and that's different for everyone. If keeping your job is a priority, as is the home you currently have, then the drive is worth it. If however saving for a vacation is a priority, and you aren't really concerned about where you live, then moving may make more sense. It's all a juggling act and its different for everyone.

Today I drove from my place in Oakville to Toronto General Hospital at University and Gerard at peak rush hour to bring my Mom to an appointment. 38 km in 52 minutes and I figured it would take me 1-1/2 hours. Yes traffic was brutal but I have done 50 minute commutes in Sudbury and Northern Ontario highways that have been far more stressful. I don't get what all the whining is about  ??? stick to the middle lane and relax.

When I lived Ontario and every time Ive been back, I never found the traffic through T.O. stressful....boring, sure, but stress never entered the equation if you gave yourself enough time.
Lighten up Francis.....

I commuted and drove around TO for 30 years nigh on and was never stressed out by it...although a couple of trips on the DVP in rush hour in blizzards with the all season people getting stuck in front of me got close.    And I did all those years with a manual transmission.

People create their own stress.

The number of people see jumping lanes yet they end up right beside me again or even behind me I just scratch my head. Crank up the tunes, relax and enjoy the slow ride.

Ive had people honk and flash their high beams in bumper to bumper traffic.....where exactly do you think you can go, the thousands of cars in front of you will not magically evaporate.

I used to do a 25km commute each way to work (for about 10 years), it was almost all highway driving, easy, except for construction or accidents/bad weather.  None of that bothered me, but when our oldest was starting kindergarten, we decided to move to town, because we didn't want to deal with the anxiety of getting her off to a sitter in the morning before school, and rushing home to pick her up from the sitter.

I will admit, I did enjoy the 'wind down' time spent in the drive home each day, chance to listen to the radio and unload your mind from the days events.  But I prefer my 10 min drive home now, especially when the kids are involved in a school event and I'm able to get there.  I can have the bbq fired up and a cold beer in my hand while others are still on the road.

If I commuted I would be a murderer.

I've been spoiled by my 5 minute drive to work. I snap drive across Waterloo at 5:30 to have dinner with my folks twice a month.

People are assholes, I'm an a$$hole, it doesn't go well.
