Watched the first episode of 'Masters of the Air' today. Impressed so far

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA-1JCRguZ0

I've been watching it.  I like it.  Little disappointed with all the CGI planes, but there's really no way they could have gotten the shots they wanted otherwise.

Still a cool show, though.

Although I feel like there's a BUNCH of filler - the opening credits are like 5 minutes long, and then there's another 5 minutes of 'next episode preview' before the 10 minute long end credits.  Takes a 50 minute show and cuts it down to 35 minutes of actual content.  I feel like that's deliberate cost cutting.

CGI is probably the only choice these days. I think  "Battle of Britain"  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Britain_(film) was probably the last production to use all the real aircraft. Although A Bridge to Far assembled an impressive collection of C47's (Dakotas in the RAF) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Bridge_Too_Far_(film)
Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

A lot of super obvious CGI is always a turn off for me.

Part of the reason Mad Max looked so good is that they used a lot of practical effects. The trailer for Furiosa looks a lot worse because of the CGI.

Don't get me wrong, Master of the Air is still worth a watch - it is after all, in the same realm as Band of Brothers, having both Spielberg and Hanks as executive producers.

Unlike BoB however, I don't get the impression of cohesiveness and gelling, and I don't feel the same connection to the characters.  Band of Brothers made me feel like I was part of Easy Company - so much so that when somebody died, or was gravely injured, I felt genuine loss.  It was probably something to do with the chemistry between the actors, and the bootcamp that they all had to go through together prior to filming.  In Masters of the Air, if a plane goes down and a crew is lost, I have to recall and figure out who the heck it was that was lost, and what their relationship was to the main characters.  The Pacific also lacked this crucial aspect.

It's not as dark as 'The Pacific' which I appreciate, but the main characters are a) behind oxygen masks much of the time, and b) are dying off at a massive rate

Which was true to life, apparently. 'We lost 8 planes, well that's 80 guys not showing up for supper'

Like that they are making an effort to show more than planes and aircrew though. The efforts of the ground crews, the resistance movements, flak teams, displaced people etc

Wars are always bigger than just the guys on the pointy end

To celebrate the year of the dragon we are watching "House of the Dragon"
The dragons are truly amazing, but I think there is some trick photography there. No way they found such huge dragons in real life.

My free month of AppleTV+ was running out, and just wanted a bit more to finish Masters of the Air. Found the Shoppers Drug Mart app has a free offer that gives 3 months of the service, so voila!

Not bad considering apple tv has gone up to $12.99 a month now

Is there a show called Wharf Rats on AppleTV?
I've been trying to find it for a while, comedy made in PEI.

As a teenager my wife actually saw him on Broadway in the 1977 revival of The King and I.

Likewise.  ;D
Wokeism is nothing more than the recognition and opposition of bigotry in all its forms.  Bigots are predictably triggered.

This is quite excellent to watch before hand for a historical perspective. Was very, very good all on it's own.
