Tell her to hit the road.  You sold her the car in MAY and she's asking for money now??  Who knows what she did in the ~4 months since the sale.  Maybe she's to blame for the additional work required...maybe not.

I'd say if this was days after the car was sold, this story might have legs.  But 4 months after the fact?  Plenty of stuff that was fine mechanically can go in 4 months time, easy.

If so inclined, I could EASILY ruin wear items on a brand new car in 4 months, let alone a used one.

Does anyone have any sources for their facts? Like a website or equal that I could enclose with my answer to her? I need something to back myself up with.

Link to this thread.  We'll take care of her.   ;D

My problem right now is that I have to take care of all this business through e-mail, though I'm not in Canada at the moment, and I need to formulate this in a nicely way.

Does anyone have any sources for their facts? Like a website or equal that I could enclose with my answer to her? I need something to back myself up with.

You will only make the matter worse by explaining your position.  Trust me I deal with these very things.

Try this:  "I'm sorry to hear that you are having mechanical issues with your vehicle.  Be advised that I am unable to assist you.  Sincerely .....     and then never respond to any subsequent demands.

BTW, what make , model and year?  :)

Good advice Steve
I bought a car once without getting it inspected beforehand , my mechanic was busy and I took a chance , 3 weeks later the clutch went . I knew it was my fault for not getting the car inspected before buying it . I didn't go whining to the past owner for something I knew was my fault .

Not like the mechanic could have told you the clutch was on the way out unless he dropped the tranny....and I suspect you weren't going to pay to have the tranny dropped...

It's a saturn vue 2003. It's also a rebuilt, which she also knew when she bought it, I bought it as a rebuilt as well. But still, Didn't have any problems with it, what so ever during the time I had it. I drove more or less cross the country with it. From Vancouver to calgary in the fall and from calgary to montreal to calgary in the spring. And it started everyday in the winter, even in -36 c.

no , I certainly wouldn't have paid for that .---- It ended up being my favorite car I've owned ( 85 Prelude ) so it was well worth the repair to me .

If you have to communicate with this person, AS has provided a good template. One of the keys is to emphasize "...your vehicle."

The one thing that most of us Canuks have in common, save for those ppl that have been spoon fed by wealthy parents, is that we have all bought STUPID at one time in our lives.  Be it cars, boats, sleds, you name it, we've gone for the "deal" and got burned.  It's as Canadian as BEER.  :)

So is this instance .......   a 2003 VUE  :o      .... only one direction that vehicle is gonna take you ..

DOWN

The best advice for this young lady is to do absolutely nothing to the vehicle and drive it until it stops at which time it's scrap.

OMG, she KNOWS the car is a write-off vehicle and she is whining about problems after buying it with NO pre-purchase inspection?

My email to her?

Dear Madam;

Pound Sand.

Sincerely,

Can you get plates if a car is written off?

I e-mailed her with a nice answer

Quote
I am sorry to hear that you are having mechanical issues with your vehicle.
At the time of the sale I disclosed what I knew about the car, and you agreed to buy based on that information (i.e. the oil leaks in the engine, left headlight burnt out). There by the price reduction with 800cad from 5000cad to 4200cad.

It is unfortunate, but be advised that I have no further liability, and this is the end of the matter and I will not discuss this further or replay to any further inquires.

and I also got a happy answer back.

Quote
you told me that the oil leak would cost $60 to fix and that if it was any more to let you know, my friend heard you say that!
I will be taking you to court over this!

Should I be worried? even the slightest?

No.  Stop worrying and stop communicating.

The more you communicate the more you put your foot in it.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

Should I be worried? even the slightest?

90% certainty you will not be in court.  100% certainty if you do end up there she will lose.  No more communications, as per your email to her.

I have sold beaters in the past (and yes, a $4200 write-off Vue is a beater) and I have sent flakes with cash in hand packing.  I sold an old Honda Accord and sent many people away before I had a buyer that really knew what they were getting into.  It's worth the wait...

I will not replay on any of her e-mails.

I would like to hear from someone with equal experiences, to calm myself down with. Is there anywhere I can call to confirm everything everybody has said?

Add her email address to your spam filter and that'll be the end of that.
