So what do you think so far from all these posts?
I expect that we will fly to Madrid and stay in the Southern area of Spain as Mrs. Railton likes 'heat'. So....Granada, Seville, Cordoba, et all.
What cities do most carriers fly into?
Railton

Railton, are you planning on staying at the same place during visit and just branching out for day trips or are you staying at different places along your trip?  Also, if you are flying into Madrid, make sure you visit Toledo.  It's less than an hour south of Madrid.  GORGEOUS town!

Like AB mentioned, Air Transat flies direct to Spain from Toronto.  Air Canada also has a few direct flights to Madrid.  Most of them seem to have connections in Frankfurt or Munich though.

And, ~$150 or so/pp to fly from Paris to Madrid. So, a possibility to fly in to Paris first for a few days and fly to Madrid thereafter and the flight home.

I think with careful booking you'll find flights from Spain that get you to Paris ( or Amsterdam) in plenty of time for the afternoon flight to Canada.  You'll get a better deal and you probably can check your baggage right through...which saves hassle in Paris.

Certainly the 07:30 flights from all the French provincial airports do that and I bet there will be a couple from Madrid, Barcelona, the other big cities  and probably even Algeciras ( 'cos that is where the ferry from Morrocco lands).

In the event that you intend to cross an EU border once inside the EU   you MUST get your passport stamped when you first enter the EU.   I guess your only possibilities would be France/Spain or Spain/Portugal

FWIW  TAP the Portuguese airline does a non-stop to Lisbon, which is then easy to drive to Mid- Spain

Another way if you intend to do Barcelona would be to do AF -> Paris and on to Perpignan. Then drive across the border to Barcelona and onwards.   That way would not work too well if Madrid and south is the plan.

Mr and Ms Railton are looking to plan a trip to Spain for next Fall, early September. Anyone have any recommendations as far as where to stay and visit while there?
We have a week at a time share that we plan on using although have not booked the specific location yet as well as booking another hotel for the 2nd week or vice versa. We plan on renting a car for at least a week while there to travel around. International license required?
Railton
I take it when you say next fall you mean fall 2012 yes?
If charter flight schedules such as Air Transat repeats what it offered this summer, you could fly into Madrid and fly home from Malaga (south coast). Great drive from Madrid to Malaga, with lots of nice sites to see on the way south or vs/vs.  Just buy a fly and drive combo thru Transat Holidays.
It is roughly 550km Madrid to Malaga, and Madrid is well worth a visit. Quite a beautiful city, and if you like unusual hotels have a look at this one in Madrid  Hotel Silken Puerta America Madrid, and ditto on seeing Toledo, just south of Madrid on the way to Malaga

Air Canada offers daily non-stop service Toronto to Madrid this year, if you prefer schedule carriers over the charter flights.

We spent a couple of weeks there a couple of years ago.

I used AC points and flew to Frankfurt, then Lufhansa to Barcelona.

I swapped for a timeshare in Salou and used that as a base for the first week.  Salou is a beach town but nothing to write home about.  We were there in September and the weather was nice - mid 20's max and sunny.  We did day trips to Tarragona, Monsarrat and Valencia (all great).  Valencia in particular stood out.  After a week we went through the Pyrenes, Andora, and then went to Avignon FR. and explored there.  We then drove back to Barclelona and ditched the car and stayed there for a few days.  Barcelona is a jewel.

Driving in Spain was easy, but traffic in the big cities is dense.  A GPS is very useful in the cities.

Looking for places to stay now near Madrid for the first week.
Any tips for renting cars?
Do I need an international licence?

Nope, it's recommended but not required whatsoever.  I got one as it was only $15 IIRC.  AFAIK, the only place to get one is CAA.

Barcelona 2011:
I processed this batch of my pics through a filter in Photoshop, didn't have my originals handy, still cool though IMHO
If you make it to Barcelona, take the 90 minute ride by subway/train to Montserrat - breathtaking monastary in the mountains and see anything made by Gaudi. Also see the fountain light show every friday night from Mont Juic near Plaza Espana. Classical music and awesome colours and shapes from the fountain.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  The price has gone up though at CAA. They want $10 for the 2 pics and $25 for the form to attach them to.

That's definitely gone up since I got mine.  I've driven over there a number of times without issues so I wouldn't worry about it.

Wine/Sangria for the most part, Beer is not too bad either. You can get a decent Rioja region red like Campo Viejo (LCBO $12-$14) for about 4-5 Euros, IIRC. Booze is available in every corner grocery store  :)

I found the Beer selection superior in Sevilla than Barcelona. There was a little tavern/Tapas bar in the hippy district of Sevilla run by a guy married to a Russian girl that had an unbelievable selection of beers, including some knock-my-socks-off Russian dark beers - fabulous with Tapas!  :lick:
