Looks like GM is going after the lower level A4s, 3s, Is and Gs with the Cadillac and Buick brands.

DETROIT — The 2012 Buick Regal GS starts at $35,310, including an $860 destination charge, slotting in just under one of its chief Japanese competitors, the 2011 Acura TSX V6. It will go on sale this fall.

The Acura TSX V6 starts at $36,035, including an $885 destination charge. Buick specifically mentioned the Acura TSX V6 in its Regal pricing announcement on Thursday.

Other competitors include the 2012 Audi A4 2.0 TFSI, which starts at $33,375, including an $875 destination charge. The 2012 Hyundai Sonata SE 2.0T starts at $25,405, including a $760 destination charge.

The performance-oriented Regal GS is equipped with a 270-horsepower turbocharged Ecotec 2.0-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine linked to a standard six-speed manual transmission. Buick said a six-speed automatic transmission will be available later in the model year, but did not say what that feature would cost.

Buick also said the 2012 Regal with eAssist will start at $29,530, including shipping.

The eAssist hybrid system is a $2,000 option on the Regal base model with 2.4-liter Ecotec engine. Buick said it will continue to offer the base model without eAssist as well as the 2.0-liter turbo engine.

Regal with eAssist offers a boost in fuel economy to 25 mpg in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway, according to Buick.

The 2012 Buick Regal GS gets a push-button start; a leather-wrapped, flat-bottom sport steering wheel with audio controls; metal sport pedals' and leather-appointed, heated and 12-way adjustable sport seating. A Harman Kardon premium audio system with nine speakers is standard.

Somebody needs to straighten out IL. I have it on very good authority that the Sonata Turbo is NOT a competitor to the lofty premium Buick.  ;)

I'll be interested to see how Canadian pricing shakes out.

You'll notice the blurb didn't say the Hyundai was a competitor - it just said how much it costs.

Because, clearly, the Buick is in a premium class.

Seriously, they shouldn't have mentioned it, but as they have it is likely because GM can see people buying Hyundai over Buick more readily than choosing the Buick over TSX or A4.

I would love to see one of these magazines take a critical look at the direct added costs of creating upscale versions of cars. In this case, its Six Grand higher in price vs. the normal Regal turbo. Turbo boost, presumably better cooling (although this 270 HP isn't much different than what the Cobalt SS had, so maybe nothing else was done vs. the normal Regal turbo). Different wheels, tires and suspension parts. Not extra parts, just different parts that cost a bit more. Gross profit % on all that?

Wow. Cheaper than I thought it would be. Not a bad price for a lot of car. Leaves some room above it for them to bring over the AWD V6 now! :)

Yep - that might be info worth knowing before cheering real hard about what a great value it is.  Also, knowing more than the "starting" price would be informative.

I think you're over thinking this...

I would think the TL is a more direct competitor in any case. Seems about similar size and weight.

I think you're over thinking this...

Yeah, on second thought you are right. Have to wait until the Canadian prices and options come out to see how it is here. If it comes priced in recognition of our current exchange rate, and fully loaded like the TSX, then it isn't bad, comparatively.

It's small on the inside, but not small overall.  It's fractionally longer, taller and wider than my Sonata, which nobody would describe as a small car. The TL is about 4" longer than both (it still has a really big schnoz, even if said schnoz is considerably better looking for 2012) but the remaining dimensions are very close.  The TSX is about 3 1/2" shorter than either the Regal or Sonata.

Yes, that's what I meant... the Regal is small on the inside. Only people that would cross-shop a Regal with a TL are people that don't need a car as big as the TL. If you actually need the space, then the Regal wouldn't be a viable option.

It's strange how styling can affect perception. The Sonata looks deceptively larger - well longer, not necessarily taller - to me, but the specs don't lie.

It's a $42 car here. Only options in Canada are block heater, premium paint (low cost), polished alloys (low cost), NAVI (relatively low cost), and roof. Oh, and automatic later. Loaded you're at $45 for the manual. Not much more than a loaded non-GS Turbo, although it could be argued both are overpriced.
