Torque is 550Nm@1000rpm. The brake rotors seem pretty big, considering those are 19" wheels. Unladen weight 1870kg, that's RS6 territory  :o

Yeah, I was reading about this earlier.  That is a big heavy car, but I think the tires/brakes will make up for it's weight.  A lot of BMW faithful are unhappy about the V10 being dropped, the weight of the car and the general looks of the car.

I think a twin turbo power-plant leaves this thing very open to mods.  How hard would it be to hit 700HP in this with just intake/exhaust/tune?

Looks fairly awesome.  The blue paint with matching brake calipers are very nice.

Heavy for sure...but pretty much par for the course in 'full size' V8 luxo sedan these days.

If I had $100k+ (?) or whatever it is to drop on a 'does everything' car, I'd test drive this first.

...and the transmission?  How long do we need to wait for a manual?  If it's auto-only, it makes a whole lot more level playing field for the XF-R and E63.

6-spd manual or 7-spd DCT

"A manual transmission will again be available for the M5 - but for the US market only where operating a manual gearbox is still not considered troublesome."

This makes perfect sense as BMW surely doesn't want to have the 'E60 M5 situation' all over again. Back in 2004, BMW introduced the E60 M5 and announced it as SMG transmission only. US enthusiasts successfully voiced their dismay about this move, and BMW eventually offered an optional manual transmission.

I'll take mine with the DCT.  Having a computer do the shifting will probably increase the longevity of the moving parts. and gain some performance I bet.

I'm sure the DCT is the quicker car, however, let's look bigger picture here:  the M5, impressive a performance machine as it is, is never intended to be a dedicated track weapon.  If you're looking for a vehicle to simply be the fastest, milli-second-shaving closed-course choice, you'd do better to look for a proper sports car / race car than a luxury sedan.  Rather, an M5 should be about an overall driving / performance experience, which to me means the more involving manual transmission is the preferred choice.  If you simply want a luxury sedan, why not get a softer-riding 550i with an automatic instead?

I love the looks of this thing.  Seriously man.   :P

A manual will be available, although one of the regular BMW insider on the forums has said
- it was designed to perform optimally with the DCT
- this will be a test.  If the declining trend of sales of the manual continues, this will be the last time an M5 comes with the manual option.

And the truth is that the DCT will outsell the manual, because notwithstanding what is said on here, and other enthusiast forums, the manual tranny is on it's way out. And it is the "market" making that call. It may be sad, but true.

Sad but true is right.  Doesn't mean I have to like it though!

Interesting thing about the M5.  I've been looking at some used cars as my next car purchase and was looking at some used M3.  I noticed that used M5 that were the same year and similar kms to some M3 were actually cheaper.  I guess M5 are great cars but they do not hold up in residual value esp. compared to the M3.

I have never had nor even driven an M5. I have had an M3. IMO, the M3 is the superior car in that it is smaller, lighter, alledgedly easier to drive quickly well, and, as noted, likely retains its value better. I find the M5 to be a very large and heavy car. I did have an E60 535 which was a large car, the new F10 M5 is larger yet.

I have never had a desire to own an M5 (nor M6 for that matter).

A friend of mine in Calgary has now bought himself a B7 Alpina (based on the current 7 Series). That is a seriously large car, but, according to my friend, the B7 handles/feels smaller than the 7 Series.

I saw a B7 Alpina at a Vancouver dealer about 1.5 weeks ago.  Could it possibly be the same one??

When I see a previous generation M5 past by me, I find it quite sexy.  I didn't realize the used prices were similar to those of an M3..... hmm.....  might have to try one.   ;)  I probably would never be happy with an M5 though, I already feel my 335i is at the limit of what I'd be willing to go in terms of weight.

My neighbour just picked up for himself a superb black 2008 550i.  Awesome sounding motor.  Makes me wonder just a bit.   :)

Used M3's retain their value (overly) well.  At first I thought I'd go used for my next Bimmer and pick up a used M3.  But with M3s or even some others (my own car)....  when I look at the prices of excellent condition, low mileage ones, I'm not seeing any incentive whatsoever to go used over new...

Ooh I wonder if that is the one I have seen around, does it have black wheels too?

Why on earth did they make the new one bigger than the E60, is everyone getting fatter?

I don't think so, the car was a special order and shipped into Calgary, and would not have been in any dealer's showroom in Vancouver.

Yes.

Although apparently, at least for the next gen. M3, they are trying to make it lighter.

But the physical dimensions of the whole 3 series lineup will increase.
