Yes ...My black 2011 Sonata, tan and black interior...the cheapo model...which comes very well equipped, now with about 15,000 miles on the odo..

Great list, fun reading as the weather warms up and plans are being made. I'd take my Civic EX-L over the Mazda3 any day though. In the last 50 Litre Challenge, it got 200 more KM per 50L. The manual transmission is pure fun, smooth ride, comfortable seats, plenty of space for gear. And way better fuel economy than the relatively thirsty 3.

Yeah, that was me. Though I did admit to getting soft. To my credit, I did Vancouver to Boston in a regular cab Mazda B2500 - so i've earned my stripes!

And yeah, the P5 above 120 km/hr is a little much.

I just turn up the radio when driving up North in my P5. With the 5-spd manual it runs around 4,000 RPM @ 120, but no different than some other compacts I've driven and definitely more rewarding to drive!

You sure? I think it's more 3500 @ 120.

And if were were heading to North Bay the P5 is great. I always love getting in it after driving larger cars. Except the In-Laws 330 xi, of course.

Yeah, the vehicles seem pretty random. I doubt I'd pick any for a road trip

You could be right with 3500, maybe somewhere in between. I mostly drive country roads these days and haven't had a highway blast in a while. Same thing though, it always feels good to get back into the nimble, sure-footed P5 after being in something bigger and more....'numb'.

Huh. It was never written as a top ten. There are actually only eight cars on the list. That headline got written wrong, and I totally missed it when I posted the piece. $:-\$

Oh, and yes, the list is kind of a mish-mash. It's meant to be a variety of practical cars there are well-suited to carrying varying numbers of people and amounts of stuff over long distances. Feel free to post your own ideal long-haul vehicle!

This is what ya need.

Covers all the bases:

convertible
big trunk that you can lock away your stuff (major issue when roading)
super smooth
large enough to bash your way thru anything type of civil disorder.

My XRS has proven on two occasions to be a great roadtrip car. Me and three friends, a trunk full of everyones stuff and 6-8 hours on the road.

It's really a car that likes it best flying along the highways or open roads and it only reluctantly likes the city.

1997 Mercedes SL600 - ridiculously fast, smooth and comfortable
1967 Corvette 427 Convertible (amazing C2)
1968 Corvette L88 (incredible C3, massive V-8 with a manual trans)
2010 Victory Vegas 8-ball motorcycle. Not my usual cup-of-tea, but this is one of the coolest bikes on the road. Something about the thrum of a big twin on the highway. Minimalists only need apply.

I like the new Sonata - having sat in one there was easily enough room for my long legs, the seat felt comfortable and everyone I know who owns one has echoed your statements re.fuel economy (thinking back to my last mid-size, a UK Honda Accord with a 134bhp 1.8 I could get 37mpg - the Sonata is larger and has 66bhp more!). Now, if they bring the station wagon version over here (i40 estate in Europe) that'd be a winner - you can take the dog, all your stuff, two kids and two adults anywhere in the world in a mid-size station wagon.
