"972 litres in total with the rear seats folded,"

Typo?  I'd guess that's the Outback's capacity with the rear seats in place.

I'd agree with most of the list but a don't really see the Mazda,Golf or F150 as the quintessential weekend warriors you picture when you think "cottage country"

Although,I guess it depends how upscale you go when you think "cottage".....

Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

My 2010 Mazda 5 kept up along the unmade logging roads with a colleague's Highlander - minivans are surprisingly capable little things off-road (we took my Mother-in-Law's Odessey down some unmade roads too). At the end of the day very few people really need a hulking SUV with 4wd and 10,000lbs of towing. Some people won't even tow to the cottage and can get along the track just fine in a normal car - so why not drive the 1000km to your cottage using half the fuel of a gas guzzler?

A shame to have to drop over 50 big ones for a cottage bucket. BTW, with reference to the Dodge Laramie or any other full size truck... a "working truck" has an 8 foot box, the rest of the variants are for people who either are not sure of what they want or think they are impressing everyone with their stupidly outsized "car".

Not one van?
Have a 3ft high box to take with you, it will only fit in a van

That'll fit in the 5 - though probably only if you've got 4 people in the car! A full-size minivan will take more people and more stuff than almost any other vehicle listed here.

To the person talking about the Dodge Ram - 8 foot box is a must for a proper work truck, but most people have to use the truck as a family vehicle and in the 1500 world there are no crew cabs with 8 foot boxes - would you rather your family be uncomfortable 364 days of the year, or struggle to carry a proper load 1 day a year?

Where are these cottages that you need some of the vehicles to be able to get to them?

In a place where a cottage is a cottage and not a second house. No power, TV, Internet, cell service, sewer, water, or anything to distract from having fun. About a 12 hour drive north by car from Toronto. The cottage was built by utilizing boats and snowmobiles to haul in materials. My father explained to me at 14 this would be a character building exercise.

Hard work = rewards  :) After 3 years and when the cottage was finally built he started us clearing the 800m of bush to an old logging road and over the next 1o years we made the road drivable.

"Real Maritime Men" also have camps - it involves buying an RV that's no longer road worthy - driving it to a nearby lake and dumping it on the lakeside there. They then spend anywhere between 2 and 4 months living at said lake, drinking beer, defecating in the lake and throwing their garbage "out back".

Those things make great campfires in the winter :) In Ontario the MRN would move it and send you the bill.

Buy a comfortable car.  Rent a real truck when you need it.

I like Railton's "vehicle" that they took to their cottage...and occasionally used to water-ski behind.

You missed one; the Porsche Panamera 4S. Fast, comfortable, AWD and room for 4 with their stuff. A must for every Muskoka cottager!

If I had a cottage, I am going to assume it's a pretty civilized place.  Maybe no fancy stuff, but I figure that most of the time, most everything I need save from some groceries, is there.

So, for me, I figure the best way to get there would be in a Cayman S.
