When is this suppose to be released?

Even though I think it looks pretty good in the pictures I'm holding my vote until the "real" version gets released. Seen too many prototypes get changed for the real world production.

I really like the looks of this thing.  Hopefully there's a power option in the 250+hp range (along with a relative light weight).  Final judgement would have to be reserved for a true production model.  Somehow I don't mind all the weird lines and stuff when it's on a Japanese sportscar - though the rear diffuser is a little over the top on this prototype.

On one hand, I can understand going with the Scion badge (youth demographic, blah, blah), but I'd rather see a Toyota badge with a marketing linkage back to the Celica/Supra/etc...

Toyota needs at least ONE exciting car in their lineup!

I hope it doesn't take 3yrs+ to get to the lightweight 300bhp version...

Well this won't be avail until 2012..late.  Then another year before the turbo is announced.  I bet two solid years easy, Bob.

If Subaru has any say...it will take at least 2-3 model years to correct it  :run:

There's an elephant in the room here...

The assumptions seems to be $29,999 and 200HP, no turbo model (at least in the short term). A 300HP turbo model would probably cost at least $39,999, imo.

With the Genesis 2.0T available for $24,899 (and as low as $19,999 with discounts), and the 300HP V6 Mustang available at $22,999, where's the market for this thing? Both the Genesis and Mustang seem to offer much better value...

At the top end, the V6 Genesis is $33k, and the Mustang GT is $38,699.

Toyota/Scion will have to be a lot more aggressive on price than the guesses we're seeing if they expect to compete.

OK, $29K CDN for the stripper.  (AC, windows, locks, sh*tty radio, thin all season tires).  Then there will be an upgrade package perhaps with sunroof that will be an additional 3K.   And it won't be 200 HP.

Sad. Wasn't there talk originally to sell it for low 20's to attract young buyers in order to get them later hooked on Toyota and Lexus? For 29k + PDI and taxes on top I don't see it happening, esp. in the light of gen. coupe (cheaper) and Veloster (a lot cheaper). If they want 29k worth of dough they'd better offer a well boosted turbo standard.

I love the looks...hate the wimpy powertrain.  Hopefully they come to their senses and offer the turbo.  Though I suppose 200(ish) HP MIGHT be OK depending on curb weight.

Ditto all of that.

:iagree: $29k is too much given what else is out there. Especially if they brand it as a Scion - if it were a Toyota, they might be able to get away with it by playing the "it's a Toyota, it's better" card. That's a lot harder to do with a Scion.

Build it and they will come .

Pricey , yes , I'm expecting it will be the best out there with only a Miata to equal it in a truly well balanced car
in its price range or under . That in itself is worth buying for me .

A base miata is $28,000 to $42,000 for a PRHT. Rumor has it the next miata will go on a diet. ;D

Wow. What a bunch of haters in here!

I fell it is so great that Toyota is bringing out a small sportscar. We don't know much of anything about it yet, and everyone is piling on about what a turd it is??? Motor Trend said it would weigh about 2700 lbs (or 300 less than a GTI), so even with less than 200hp, it should move along pretty briskly. A good transmission and a fabulous chassis will make for an incredibly entertaining car to drive.

You anti-import guys keep pounding away at the lack of power. ;)

I'll keep my mind open until I drive one.

$29K is a bit higher than what was originally stated (low-mid 20's), but i am curious to see how the car is going to turn out.

I think it's a great car Erik, and as you say, the power to weight should be fine. I do think the pricing is a bit steep though.

I can't get past the liability of it having a Subaru engine.

Our Cooper S is about 2700 lbs with 172 HP and while no sub 6 second rocket it's certainly no slug and is lots of fun to drive.

A lot will depend on the details but this could well be a great little car.

 ???

Not one to defend my own car, which normally results in a lot of fanboy remarks round here, but I don't understand your comment above?  The Genesis Coupe has won many accolades for it's well balanced handling, and the V6 has also won many comparison tests, against great cars such as the Mustang.  Being the owner of one I can attest to the fact it certainly is a well balanced car, and is extremely easy to handle below, on, or well above the limit.  It is a very predictable car which makes it great fun to drive.

So with more power, and a $10K (plus tax) lower price tag, why wouldn't it be considered equal?  Because it's a (dare I speak its name) Hyundai?
