Ah, Toyota finally presents a replacement for the dearly departed Paseo.

I wonder if it will have "uncontrollable acceleration"? :rofl2:

Seriously, with Toyota's legacy of truly fine DOHC small engines one wonders why they now believe that the agricultural Subie boxers are the way to go. ???

Is Scion a dead brand Stateside?  I thought it was doing well --- and ideally targeted at youthful drivers.  If this new offering is a low-cost performance car (perhaps to replace the tC?), I fail to see the issue here.

We've hashed this around before...I shouldn't have started it again...my apologies everyone.

Why does everyone think Scion is a failure?  Actually Toyota considers them a huge success....

No! Toyota hasn't admitted to Scion being a failure?  Shocking!

While the first gen was a hit, they've been bust after that.  Here's but one article that talks a bit about Scion trying to change their strategy to increase their sales.

They picked that engine for its light weight and the fact it could be placed behind the front wheels for perfect balance
and its low center of gravity - it is the perfect engine for such a car
(AWD would not allow for this perfect balance by the way)

heres more pics (from autobog)

Because of the flat orientation, you can keep the center of gravity very low, have a lower hood line, mount the engine lower,  etc...
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

From the studio shots of the black car, I think the design looks way too busy.

 :(

Although if it was cheap and had over 220bhp I'd forgive it...

Oddly lit pictures too. Adds to the busyness.

210?  No idea direct injection

Well, the new 2.0L in the 2012 Impreza is set to make 148HP, so I wouldn't expect it to be to high  :(  Let's hope a Turbo comes out soon, but that would put it in the mid 30's easy.

Well if the 2012 Impreza is 148 hp then I think Ajay is probably closer to the actual HP @ 170.  Can't be anymore than 2400 lbs. with AC with that power.  I'm totally surprised.  I was expecting at around 225 HP which is perfect.

The Japanese frequently misjudge the North American market.  The "American" executives in the States have always complained about this.

The Japanese think that this new unit will be gobbled up by 20 something young Americans.  Similar to who Honda thought would buy their Element.  Who bought the Element ? .... Boomers.  Who buys the Miata ? ..... Bommers   Youngish Americans don't have jobs and have no money.  The only segment of the population in the US and Canada that have money to burn on little seasonal toys are Boomers.   But since this new Unit is not a cute Miata it needs something to attract male Boomers and that is appropriate HP.  ::)

If you want to see a real failure, look at RX-8 sales.   :rofl2:

I THINK Scion's worst sales numbers was in and around 60,000 units or so.  Which I don't think it terrible for a brand that has only 3 cars...and cars with a limited market appeal.

RWD, 230hp turbo boxer and <$28K = winner.  But, if Toyota follows its formula for pricing many of their products, it will be $26,995 US and $34,995 Canadian.

I've always noticed that and it is good to hear someone echo the thoughts.  Growing up in my late teens and early 20's, I couldn't afford a car period because of school.  I would see all these cars I wish I could own (marketed right at me) and think 'I could never afford that'.  At the age of 30, I was just starting to break into the range where I afford these cars new (hence the WRX).

Maybe in Japanese culture it is more important for a teenage/early 20's male to own a flashy car?  Maybe they have more disposable income?

We can only hope that Toyota is holding back the "actual" thing (a real sports car) to be sold in all Toyota dealerships and this Scion unit is just a baby version of the real deal.  :P
