The New Oak Tree in Carleton Place caries some nice hand made solid wood furniture.
http://www.thenewoaktree.com/The_New_Oak_Tree_-_Solid_Wood_Furniture/Carleton_Place.html

Randall's also carries some nice solid wood furniture.
http://www.randallspaints.com/ran_2007/Index.html

Flinter yes the new Oak tree does, but as mentioned very expensive.  I guess like Loudpedal I'm looking for something between the garbage and the good stuff in the mid range.
Yeah.. the MSRP are kind of pricey. We lucked into a 50% off sale there last year and purchased some furniture. That said, Ms. Flinter works in CP and says 50% off sales are fairly common. :-\

The new oak tree is the old oak tree which is the new old oak tree LOL
The place has had about 15 names in the last 20 years LOL
We did buy some chairs there about 15 years ago, our daughter is now using them
Canadel has have some nice stuff at least we though so
Our set was probably over 5gs , 6 years ago
The table is big enough to set over 12
Take a look at Laz boy dealer , they carry the stuff in your area

Yeah the one set they had was $1000 off, another $1000 off and it would be a done deal.

CP and the valley does have some stuff..

1) The New Oak Tree as mentioned.   This stuff is factory made, but you can choose stains, etc.

2) simplyshaker.ca

This guy was in CP but is now in Perth.   He's pretty good and we got a bunch of stuff from him.   He'll tweak & customize no problem.

3) http://www.amishhandcraftedfurniture.ca/

This is down in Balderson - makes for a good Sunday drive.  The showroom is quite impressive.  You can get a bite to eat down there too.  The stuff is made in the States believe it or not.  I don't think they'll customize too much other than stain colour.

Some of the Oak Tree stuff can look a little "grandma", although he's added some more modern looking stuff.  The good thing about shaker/amish stuff is that it's minimalist and not that ornate, so in that way it's kind of modern.

Thanks for the links and info Kardood.  Yeah Oak Tree had 2 pieces that were more modern / contemporary.  The rest was grandma as you say, but the two they had that weren't we did like.

Got a price on a canadel table.  $1500 not too bad, although I rather maple over birch that they offer which I can get for about the same if not less at the new Oak tree.

I'd also prefer Maple over Birch. Natural cherry looks terrific in just about any piece of furniture too.

Cherry is too red, no matter the stain it seems, and more pricey

I had to check the color myself. You're right on both counts, it does have a red/orange hue to it, and it is more pricey. I think Maple is probably the best bang for the buck.

Here is a shot of a natural cherry clear finish on a bedroom piece we purchased a couple of years ago. I kinda like the marbling in the grain of cherry.

I knew someone who bought some nice furniture...but he had to finish it himself.  Which he preferred since he could pick the color.  Are there any of those places up there??

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

I'm sure I could, but thestores are offering my selection of colour and I'm no pro. I have no patience and would drip everywhere.  I did an ikea table it isn't bad but I wouldn't call it a show piece.

He wasn't a pro either.  He used a one step product and the results were stunning.  The results were so good that I used the same product to finish some ashtrays I made and the results were just as good.

For future reference, here's the product:  http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/one-step-stain-and-finishes/polyshades.html

We saw some very nice canadel tables at one of the stores and had me thinking of ordering but still very pricey.

I can't justify paying $5k+ for something we will use once a year.

So we headed to Ashley Furniture, they had a 33% off sale, ended up with a veneer table, 6 chairs and a buffet for $1400 all in (Taxes and delivery)  If in a few years we hate it, we can just swap it out for something nicer.

We have no table in our kitchen so we use our dinning everyday so probably spending the money on the canadel stuff, we also have 2 leafs forit and can seat up 12 no problem

It is like spending big bucks for outdoor stuff that you may use 5 months
