Real wood or at least somewhat?
« on: March 20, 2011, 09:30:08 pm »
Does anyone sell real wood furniture or at least partial wood anymore?

Looking for a dining set, we looked at every store I know of in ottawa.  Found nothing we even remotely liked.

Most is crap laminate for 2k for a dinig set I don't want laminate junk.

We did find one store that builds custom furniture but it is very pricey as expected, we might that.

But we use to have furniture stores that had customizable dinig sets for somewhat reasonable prices they all seem to have gone the way of the dodo.

Any suggestions?  Looking for something contemporary, may have to travel to Montreal perhaps?

Story of our past week...I wish I could point you in the right direction, my wife and I are in the exact same boat.    Looking for a new dining room table and chairs.    It seems that anything <2K is all offshore veneer tables, there is basically nothing between 2K - 3.5K.  For anything that is solid wood and made in Canada is 3.5K+, with a definite sweet spot between 4K and 5K.

I haven't bought a dining table in 10 years...after finding one I hope to not be back in the market for some time.   :(

I recall Ethan Allan having lots of solid wood furniture, but the prices were ridiculous.  Most of our furniture is solid, and custom made for the same $$ or less than high end stores.

Costco isn't bad but with furniture if you can't touch it and feel it, it kind of scares me a little.  We were going to order a couch set from costco but decided to go with a local store because we saw so many locally we didn't like we were afraid the online looked good online but may not be what we expect.

John, so where did you get it ;)

I hear ya!  99% of the stuff in large stores is absolute crap.  St Jacobs near me has a few places that make solid wood furniture (Mennonite) that is very reasonably priced, and very very nice indeed.  Come down, if you bring the S2000 I'll buy you dinner!   ;D

An auto-enthusiast acquaintance of mine opened this Mennonite furniture retailer in Brockville.  I haven't been there, but might be worth a look.

S2000 isn't road legal ;)

Do Mennonites build modern / contemporary type stuff?  I'm sure what they build is nice but perhaps not our style.

I'm scouring kijijji surprisingly that may work out for us.  We missed one nice set, I emailed the sellers the day it came up, never got a reply then emailed a few days later, still no reply then it disappeared so they must have sold it.  Kind of rude to not reply.

We just sold our junky ikea set on kijiji and bought a nearly new real wood kitchen set Fro $250!   Used furniture seems to be worth basically nothing so it is a good resource.

The custom route may end up being our only way but we are looking at at least $5k for a table eek

Flinter yes the new Oak tree does, but as mentioned very expensive.  I guess like Loudpedal I'm looking for something between the garbage and the good stuff in the mid range.

Oh that's fun I could play with that for awhile.  I will then I'm sure I'll hit the buy button and fall off my chair haha but I'll try it.

We've bought a lot of stuff from Woodcraft over the last 10 years.  http://www.woodcraft.ca/index.php

They'll custom tailor for your needs as well.  We liked it because you can buy one piece 5 year after you bought the first piece, and it will match perfectly.

Way cheaper than Ethan Allan...and not that much more than the crap most people usually buy.

Sure, I don't know him too well, his name is Ryan. Sank all his money into this business and has not time to play lately, but he's been around an autocross track a few times

Our kitchen set came from a Mennonite / Amish type retailer.  Solid, make that SOLID wood, gorgeous grain and unbelievably comfortable seats.  The only downside is it makes half the other furniture in our house look like absolute junk.

Yeah.. the MSRP are kind of pricey. We lucked into a 50% off sale there last year and purchased some furniture. That said, Ms. Flinter works in CP and says 50% off sales are fairly common. :-\
