This week Canadian Tire has Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 4.4L for $25. Not the best synthetic but very good for the price. Also German Castrol on special this week.

Is it? Now I am super happy. The G8 takes almost two of those puppies to hit the fill mark on an oil/filter change.

Yeah that is about $5L which is good for a "blend" synthetic like Pennzoil Platinum. I need an oil that mets GM GM4718M. I prefer GC-0W-30 but not GM approved. GC only comes in the 1L bottles so best to buy by the box...I prefer 0W-30 for the Rover, no block heater you see...GC getting long in tooth but old habits die hard.

I just checked the garage. Indeed the old jugs of Platinum are 4.4L while the new one is 5L.

I choice of words was poor. I prefer German Castrol or Esso XD-3 0W-30 for their thickness at operating temp and cold weather cold start performance. My last two cars were both turbos that were hard on oil and very hot and both loved the GC. The G8 is happy with the Pennzoil Platinum.

..SO..................do ALL TURBOS need Germanic Castor OIL ????.......

seems to me a bit "dramatic" and leads to..........................$100 oil changes at VW dealershops!!sic.........................why would an $11 special GTX or Quaker state whateffer Dino OIL be "useless"..........and a Premium full synth Penz Platinum be dismissed?????

snobbism....Bullshitism....status quoism...what is it "ISM??? :banghead: :stick:

KTM do U talk to the cars...."Both loved Castrol GC........"  talk to the hand........it' s ONLY METAL and low HP @ that............ :light:

The only reason the Land Rover is getting German Castrol is that I have a leftover stash from the Volvo. Any synth would do fine. I wiill probably put on 15k km on this interval. The 0W is a bonus as the Land Rover doesn't have a block heater and it has been cold this winter.

The 1.8T in the Passat had only a 3.8L sump. When a hot engine was shut down oil left in the turbo lines would literally cook forming not sludge but little chunks of carbon called "turbo turds" These turds collected on the oil pump intake screen and would reduce oil pressure to a point where bad things would happen. German Castrol could take the heat. This was 10 years ago and many new synthetics have improved.

The Volvo V70R had a big single turbo and it made lot of heat, even more so when the car was chipped and the pressure was raised. The amount of heat that engine gave off after a good run was disturbing. It would asily heat a cold garage and feels like at least double of the heat from the G8's 6L engine.o much so that
