Toronto in terms of transportation infrastructure is pretty terrible.

Don't worry though they'll add some bike lanes. ::)
What wrong with bike lanes  ???

Its a political thing, they put them in ridiculous spots to further congest already congested traffic (removes a car lane).
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.
That makes me feel angry!

Where should they put the bike lanes then?

If gas keeps going up, us bikes might be taking over more car lanes in the future. ;)

Want to know what the infrastructure will look like with higher gas prices? Look at large European cities. Smaller cars, more transit, more accessibility for bikes/pedestrians. We are just about the only culture that thinks a 70-minute round-trip commute is 'normal', which is why our idea of gas and gas prices is a little skewed.

My personal way to deal with the price of gas is to live close to where I work.

But I don't want to live in Napanee  :(

It's hard to do sometimes.  My wife goes downtown to work which is in the exact opposite direction from. For her it's 20-25 minutes, 15km.  I drive 30km in about the same time, mostly 401. A move in either direction would not affect fuel costs.

My wife could do much of her work from home but they don't really allow that, they want a body at a desk.

Thus far the cost of fuel hasn't been much of a consideration.  It might be a larger factor than it has been in the past when picking our next main vehicle to replace the Subaru when the time comes.

More seriously,  it is a bad news for our economy...

In the short run, absolutely.  You're right in that as income is diverted to gasoline sales, it hurts other businesses.  Oil companies would beg to differ in that they say that increased activity in their sector offsets the pain in others, but I feel that is false.  Another side effect of higher gas prices is the burden on low income families, as it essentially works as a regressive tax.

Long term, higher prices might work to out benefit.  We might increase the spending on the search for alternative energy sources.  Clean, renewable energy would be a boon to economic activity in the long term.  A friend of mine is an engineer that works in the wind energy business, and he is enjoying a great deal of success in the last few years, and there seems no end in sight.  Some interesting insights though, in that wind energy is severely limited by the lack of grid infrastructure, thanks to the lack on investment in the last 20 years.  So much emphasis has been on privatization that there has been no reason to build large capacity transmission to places that are windy.  On a coal seam?  Sure.  We can't rely on the private sector to change directions.

Another possible long term benefit to high gasoline costs is increased demand for effective mass transit.  I can't speak to other cities, but in Edmonton, getting anywhere other than down three main corridors is virtually impossible, or at best takes hours of travel instead of a 20-30min drive.  Our transit system is poor thanks to the continued supply of cheap gasoline.

I have lived in London and spent much time in Paris. Both cities have, in their different ways, very good mass transit.  London has a complex subway system as does Paris. They both have many many bus routes.
Paris wins because the commuter rail system, the RER, is fully integrated as the RER trains can and do use subway tracks to get across the city.   London has an enormous commuter rail system stretching out 100 kms in any direction but it is only partially integrated.   Both cities have commuter rail/subways to the main airport but Paris just wins as the main line TGV has a station there as well.

HOWEVER.   In both cases this is paid for by the national governments of the countries. One could not expect Ontario for example to build a system that is as complex, but 1/4 scale ( population) as Paris or London. provincial governments just do not have the resources...like taxing power... to do this.

My 80% serious solution would be:  Get rid of the Provincial Governments. Declare Toronto and Montreal to be joint national capitals. Spend some serious money on both places.  Divide up any money left over between the other cities.    :hide: :run:

More seriously,  it is a bad news for our economy. Because the more we spend at the pump the less we spend on something else.  My personal way to deal with the price of gas is to live close to where I work.

Living close to work isn't going to help you pay the increased prices for the goods you buy.  Consumers will bear the brunt of higher materials and transportation costs associated with higher oil prices.

After living in Europe for 12 years, and now back in Canada, it still surprises me  about the lack of high speed mass transit (eg. YYZ airport to downtown) we have here.  High gas prices are here to stay.  I don't think this is a short term blip.

They are getting close now BUT.
The usual suspects are whining about the extra trains ( diesels) going through Weston.
The Gov says the will electrify that line but they say a 2 year study is required first. 2 Freaking years to  STUDY the electrification about 30kms of railway.  No wonder there has been no new infrastructure for 20 years

They keep talking about a TGV Windsor-Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal-Quebec City.  I have a suspicion that every time it comes up they do a traffic survey. They find that:
a) It would be MUCH cheaper to build some better expressways but politically they dare not say that.
b) All four of the people who said they'd use the train died a few years ago of old age.

So the surveys never get published and it goes quiet again for a few years.

And why do you think I used those particular smileys.   ;)

Actually the money saved by closing Ottawa and selling it off to Disney would pay.
