Regular here ranges from 100.9 to 112.9. The gas price app on the iPhone looks like it will be very handy in the days ahead.

Canadian gasoline pricing is unrelated to Libyan events. No domestic competition means the oil-gopoly can increase prices for any reason or no reason at all. Further, 35- 50 percent of the pump price depending on the province are taxes like the McGuinty HST, which grow with every price increase.

We (in Northern Ontario) have been paying $1.24.9 for regular for almost 8 weeks...today it's $1.28.9 for regular.  Northern Ontarians are "very" familiar with "higher" fuel prices on an ongoing basis, so I have to chuckle when the Southern Ontario media "panic" and feature it as their lead story when gas goes up at the pumps.  Until everyone is driving an electric/hydrogen etc. powered vehicle, we'll have to just "suck it up" and pay the rate.  Changing your type of vehicle, where practical may help, but in the end.....it is what it is.

$1.264 or some such price now.  It went as high as $1.334 last week.  What is worse is that was the second increase in less than seven days.  :o

The iPhone apps are nice, but only if there is any significant difference in the price between the various outlets.  My experience has always been that each of the company retail outlets AND the independents all charge the same amount to the penny.  What is more, the price changes all happen at the same time.  As long as such cartel like activities take place, there is no point in price shopping at the pumps.  Just buy what you need / want and be done with it. >:(

The iPhone gas-price app would be useless here. The retailers in Vernon raise prices in lock-step and they're all the same down to the last tenth of a cent. The only differences are in the 'rewards' you get for buying gas like Canadian Tire money.

Regular went from $1.149 to $1.239 about a week ago. For some reason it's always a few pennies cheaper in outlying towns like Enderby, but it's never enough to make the trip worthwhile.

I discovered Canadian Tire has premium for 2-3 cents cheaper than the big gas stations. They get their gas from PetroCan correct?

 :fiver:

Slight correction on the HST.  It's now a FEDERAL TAX administered by the Federal Government who had to pass a bill in Parliament to make it happen.  So it's actually the Harper Sales Tax; hence HST.  :)

So why can one predict tomorrows gas price off the front NYMEX RBOB contract and the USDCAD rate? ::)

Keep telling yourself that "Canadian" gasoline is totally insulated from the rest of the world market and pass some of that :censor: you're smoking over here.

So, you seem to be in the business. Predictions for gas prices over the next year? Realize that is probably pretty hard to nail down, but any effects from possible causes to watch for?

Certainly Canadian gas prices are related to world oil concerns, but the actual % increase is not.

Allowing PetroCanada, a company that Canadians poured tens of Billions into and then sold to "friends of Government" for a song, to acquire Sunoco in Ontario while simultaneously closing a refinery (reducing capacity) sans any public discussion serves no constructive purpose other than to make a few ppl wealthy.

Regardless of political party, we pay for our MPs/MPPs to provide pathways for multinationals to screw us.  Obviously, most ppl are too stupid to realize this, but for the few of us it's very annoying to say the least.  :P

You can quite accurately compute tomorrows retail gas price from the NYMEX spot price for unleaded.  Plus/minus our local differences... Like AirB's Cobourg is always cheaper than anywhere else in Ontario!

Although lately I am not sure that the powers that be understand the idea that the $Can is worth more than the $US.

That's how the price in NB is regulated - based on the rack price at New York, there's a published formula.

Just get the speculators out if the market, and things will sort themselves out. Mandate that all purchasers of oil or gas actually have to take delivery of the product they are buying, and watch the market calm right down.

I bought PetroCanada shares on the initial IPO.  Does that make me a friend of the government?

The price of gas doesn't seem to be an issue yet, based on the heavy foots I see trying to get to the red light first.

Ah, the "hurry to wait" syndrome. ::) :shake:

I've never understood that almost childish response to a driver beside or in front of the driver in question to zoom ahead under hard acceleration only to come to a screeching halt at a red light.

Perhaps it's the driver:  He/she just has to be first in line, regardless of the fact that the car he/she just passed catches up to him/her in a few seconds or even more galling, several blocks.  All of which means the speeder has gained absolutely no distance on the other drivers.

Perhaps it's the car itself:  some muscle car or performance vehicle or even some riced out Civic.  Such a car might make a driver more likely to hit the accelerator a little too enthusiastically.

Lighting up the rears in a high power RWD is awesome, brings out the inner child. Power oversteering is good too. The gas is the least of the problems, you should see the tire bill ;).
